SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah football cornerback Clark Phillips III was named the AP Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year with six Utes including Phillips earning first-team AP All-Pac-12. A panel of seven sports writers, who regularly cover the league, selects the AP All-Pac-12 team each year.
Joining Phillips on the first-team is Braeden Daniels (OL), Dalton Kincaid (TE), Gabe Reid (DE), Simote Pepa (DT) and Karene Reid (LB). It is the second straight year that the Utes have taken home the AP Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year award with linebacker Devin Lloyd gaining the recognition last season.
Phillips, who was also voted first-team all-conference by the coaches, has started in every game he has appeared in this season (12), recording 24 total tackles (2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack) with six interceptions and six pass breakups. The Jim Thorpe Award finalist is tied for the lead among Power Five players this season in total interceptions (6).
Daniels has started all 13 games this season at left tackle, also earning first-team All-Pac-12 by the coaches in 2022. He has been a part of the offense that ranks 10th nationally and second in the Pac-12 in rushing offense (220.2) with the Utah offensive line only allowing 9.0 sacks this season, which ranks sixth in the FBS.
Kincaid leads the team in receptions (70), receiving yards (890), receiving touchdowns (8) and receiving yards per game (74.2) in 2022. The tight end, who earned All-Pac-12 first-team by the coaches, ranks second among FBS tight ends in receiving touchdowns and leads all active tight ends in receiving yards and yards per game.
G. Reid has played in 12 games with four starts, recording 39 tackles (10.0 TFL, 5.5 sacks), leading the team in sacks and ranking second in tackles for loss. He was outstanding from start to finish in Utah's Pac-12 title win over USC, notching five total tackles with 3.0 being for loss and 2.0 being sacks.
Pepa, a CFN Freshman All-American, has played in all 13 games with 26 tackles (6.0 TFL, 4.0 sacks) and two pass breakups. He has contributed 5.5 tackles for loss in the last four games, including a career-high 3.0 against Stanford.
