PROVO, Utah –
Rachel Whipple of the Utah track & field team had a great start to the 2022-23 indoor season, taking second in the pentathlon with a total of 3352 points on Thursday at the BYU Indoor Invitational inside Smith Fieldhouse. Despite it being her first time ever competing in the pentathlon, Whipple's 3352 points saw her move into ninth on the all-time list at Utah.

Whipple started the day taking second in her heat of the 60m hurdles, third overall, with a mark of 9.02 before taking third in the high jump with a top leap of 1.58m (5-2.25) on her third attempt. Over in the shotput, the Bountiful native had her best throw on her first attempt with a toss of 9.32m (30-7).

In the second to last event, Whipple leaped a distance of 4.72m (15-5.75) in her second attempt in the long jump to take eighth overall. In the final event of the day, Whipple was narrowly edged out in the 800m race and finished in second with a mark of 2:24.15.

Also competing today for the Utes were
Delaney Gates and
Malia Overton – who both saw action in the long jump. Gates open the indoor season recording a leap of 5.27m (17-3.5) in the long jump while Overton, a transfer from SF State, made her collegiate and Utah debut with a mark of 5.03m (16-6). Gates also saw action in the triple jump, finishing with a mark of 9.85m (32-3.75).

With day one all wrapped up at the BYU Indoor Invitational, day two will be a bit busier for Utah with the full squad competing on Friday, Dec. 9.
