SALT LAKE CITY — Utah has achieved its highest national ranking since 1997-98 in the
LEARFIELD Directors' Cup final winter standings, and ranks second among all Pac-12 schools, its best conference standing at this point in the school year since joining the conference in 2011. The Utes rank 25th in all of Division I with 435.50 points, the highest ranking for Utah Athletics in the final winter standings since achieving a ranking of 20th in 1997-98. The only Pac-12 program ahead of Utah is Stanford, which ranks second in Division I.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. Utah Skiing led the way, contributing 100 points by virtue of its third consecutive NCAA team championship, achieved in March. The Utes' third-place finish last week at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships final provided 85 points and a boost from 35th to 25th nationally since the April 7 update.
Those achievements, along with women's basketball's advancement to the second round of the NCAA tournament, which contributed 50 points, and the men's swimming and diving program's 32 points from its eight participants in the NCAA Championship meet, provided Utah's overall winter total of 267.00 points to achieve the historic winter standing.
"We're incredibly proud of our amazing student-athletes, who continue to perform at such a high level," said Director of Athletics
Mark Harlan. "What they have accomplished to this point is unmatched in our Pac-12 history, and our best position nationally in more than 20 years. We're excited for our spring sports to make a strong postseason push and continue the upward trajectory."
The winter performance built upon the success of Utah's fall sports, which contributed 168.5 points of the 435.5 total accumulated thus far. The Utes' Pac-12 champion football team contributed 64.5 points, while women's cross-country added 54 points for its 20th-place finish in the NCAA Championship meet and the volleyball program scored 50 points by advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a first-round win over Utah Valley.
The Division I LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings will be updated in mid-June, and the final rankings will be issued in early July.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed in 1993-94 as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today.
