PARK CITY, Utah – University of Utah head Nordic ski coach
Miles Havlick has been selected by U.S. Ski & Snowboard as Cross Country Development Coach of the Year, announced by the organization on Tuesday.
The award commemorates not only the success realized by Havlick and the Utes on the way to Utah's 15
th national championship (14
th NCAA title) this past season, but also the impact Havlick and his athletes are having on sport development. It additionally recognizes the team culture Havlick has helped establish with the Utes and collaboration with the national team.
It is the third accolade earned this season by Havlick, a Utah alumnus who completed his fourth year as head Nordic coach in 2022. He was also tabbed USCSCA National Nordic Coach of the Year and RMISA Nordic Coach of the Year.
Havlick guided five current Utes to selection for the U.S. Cross Country Ski Team this past season—three made their Olympics debut in
Luke Jager,
Sophia Laukli and
Novie McCabe. Laukli and McCabe each posted top-20 Olympics performances before returning to college racing and winning individual NCAA Championships in March 2022.
Utah was also represented at the FIS World Cup and World Junior/U23 Championships. Laukli and McCabe placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the Tour de Ski final stage. In addition,
Sydney Palmer-Leger capped the year among the world's top junior women on the FIS distance points list.
On the college circuit, the Utes Nordic team had another incredible season in 2022, culminating alongside Utah's alpine crew with the NCAA championship. Along the way the Utes took first place in all but one RMISA regular season meet, before finishing atop the pack at the RMISA and NCAA Championships.
It was a campaign in which the Utes won both the overall Nordic and women's Nordic RMISA regular season championships, tallying a near-200-point cushion in both standings. In the RMISA men's Nordic standings, Utah was second.
At the NCAA Championships, McCabe was crowned an individual national champion in the women's 5K classic and
Sophia Laukli triumphed in the women's 15K freestyle. Utah had more All-America performances than any other program with 14 overall awards, seven Nordic and seven alpine.
Utah had an RMISA-leading 13 individual Nordic wins throughout the 2022 season, including in all 12 women's races. Palmer-Leger, the RMISA Most Valuable Skier (both women's classic and freestyle) tallied six victories, McCabe four and Laukli earned a pair of wins. On the men's side,
Luke Jager scored his first collegiate win in the men's 20K freestyle at the NCAA West Regional.
The team's 33 Nordic podiums were the most in the RMISA and 20 more than the next-closest program. It includes four women's sweeps.
