SALT LAKE CITY – For the third time in the 2022-23 season, the University of Utah diving team is preparing to compete in California and in this instance, they'll be heading to Los Angeles, the site of the UCLA Diving Invite, which is scheduled to take place from Jan. 13-15 at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
This will mark the eighth time in the last nine years Utah has participated in this event, most recently in January of 2021. One of the stars of that event for the Utes was
Lexi Mills, who logged third place finishes in the 1m and 3m before taking fourth on the platform.
"This is the largest meet of the year from a numbers perspective," said diving coach
Richard Marschner, "and the meet includes most of the top teams from our zone. It will be a really good opportunity to see how we are going to stack up at zones in March and give us an indicator about our prospects for qualifying for NCAAs. We just put in two great weeks of training and we're ready to go. I hope and expect to see us treat this like a preview for zones and earn multiple placings that would qualify us for NCAAs if this were the zone meet."
This meet will give the Utes their first chance on the platform since Princeton's Big Al Invitational and they made the most of their opportunities in that competition. On the women's side,
Kathryn Grant set a new pool record and snagged first place with a score of 282.40 and
Holly Waxman landed in third. In the men's platform prelims,
Jenner Pennock achieved a personal-best with 356.80 points, a mark that also goes down as sixth-highest all-time for Utah. In the final,
Luke McDivitt posted a score of 385.50, which put him in first place.
Last Time Out
One of the highlights of Utah's Saturday meet against Colorado Mesa was the debut of
Elias Petersen, who wasted no time making a positive impression, recording two NCAA Championship qualifying marks. He started the day by grabbing the top spot in the 3m with a score of 349.35, then put together an even better performance in the 1m. Peterson finished with 372.60 points, the highest total by a Ute to this point in 2022-23 and it also put him fourth in the program record book in that event. Petersen's work on the boards earned him the title of Pac-12 Men's Diver of the Week.
The Utes also got strong performances out of Mills, who won the women's 3m and posted an NCAA qualifying score of her own, and
Lizzy DeCecco, the first place finisher in the women's 1m.
Jake Suchowski put forth a solid effort as well, taking second in both men's competitions.
Looking Ahead
Utah's women's swimming and diving team will welcome Washington State to the Ute Natatorium for a Jan. 20 dual meet that will begin at 4 p.m.
