SALT LAKE CITY – With less than two months separating the University of Utah swimming and diving team from the first day of the NCAA Championships, the Utes are looking to take advantage of every opportunity to keep improving and their next chance comes on Friday at the Ute Natatorium, when Utah's women's swim and dive team will host the Washington State Cougars at 4 p.m.
"I'm excited about Friday," said head coach
Jonas Persson, "and I know the girls are really excited. We know Washington State is a great program and a well-coached program and we know they'll be fired up. It's going to be a fun meet, it's going to be an exciting meet with a lot of energy. I expect us to continue what we've been doing, continue our momentum and keep learning from our experiences at these meets to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships."
Friday's contest will be the first dual meet between Utah and WSU since Feb. of 2016 and it will be the Cougars first trip to Salt Lake City since Feb. of 2015. The Utes will be aiming for their first dual meet triumph over WSU since they scored a 163-99 win on Feb. 8, 2014. On that day, Utah took first place in 12 of the afternoon's 16 races and bookended the competition with a pair of relay victories.
Meet Day Promotions
On Friday, the Utes will be holding a belly flop competition inside the natatorium and it will begin at 4 p.m. Members of the Utah swimming and diving team will serve as judges to determine the winner and that victor will receive $200.
Last Time Out
Utah's swimmers most recently helped their squad to back-to-back wins over Colorado Mesa on Jan. 6 and 7 and
Summer Stanfield was one of the stars of those meets. She spent the first day besting the field in the 200 freestyle and the 400 individual medley, then claimed the top spot in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM on day two. Stanfield has put up multiple wins in four different meets so far in 2022-23.
The Utes also topped the Mavericks in each relay during both meets and piled up a list of individual winners that included
Marlene Sandberg,
Lily Milner,
Charity Pittard,
Sadie Edwards,
Reagan Cathcart,
Cameron Daniell,
Krystal Lieu and
Norah Hay. These triumphs helped Utah top Colorado Mesa 128-38 in their first contest and 143-42 a day later.
Looking Ahead
Both Utah's men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be at home one last time on Jan. 27 and 28 when the Utes host BYU.
