SALT LAKE CITY – The final home meet of the 2022-23 season is drawing near for the University of Utah swimming and diving team and during that clash with the BYU Cougars, which will be held on Friday and Saturday inside the Ute Natatorium, the Utes will be honoring the 11 senior members of this year's squad.
The divers from both teams will be in action on Friday, starting at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday's festivities, which will include swimming and diving, will start at 11 a.m. The senior day ceremonies will also occur on Saturday and are scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m.
"I think we're ready," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "It's the women's team's last dual meet and last chance to prepare for conference, so I know they're excited. They swam really well against Washington State. We're looking to improve on that and if they improve on that and keep getting better, they're going to get a W. On the men's side, we lost last year by 60 points and I know they want revenge. They're fired up and ready to go."
"BYU is always a really intense, fun meet," said diving coach
Richard Marschner. "Everybody is excited to go against a rival. I think they've got a couple really good divers who we'll have to be on our A-game to beat. They bring out the best in us and I'm looking forward seeing Elias [Petersen] get a real strong competition in there and the ladies as well. I think we've had some good training and we're ready to pop some good scores."
This is not the first time the red and blue have seen each other in 2022-23, as they competed in an exhibition relay meet in Provo on Sept. 23. The Utes claimed six first-place finishes that day, including a win in the mixed 200 free relay in which Utah teams claimed the top three spots.
Persson's charges will be looking for a repeat of the last time the Cougars came to Salt Lake City, which occurred in Jan. of 2021 and ended in victories by the men's and women's squads. In the women's competition, Audrey Reimer broke two pool records and
Maddie Woznick tied another in a 176-124 triumph. The men's meet finished 179-121 in Utah's favor and saw Cooper DeRyk shatter a pool record in the 100 butterfly and
Tony Chen take first place in 1m and 3m.
Meet Day Promotions
The first 100 fans inside the natatorium on Saturday will receive a free pair of sunglasses and those in attendance on that day can also grab a Utah rally towel.
Last Time Out
The last dual meet for Utah's male swimmers and divers occurred on Jan. 7 and ended in a 128-57 victory for the Utes over Colorado Mesa, while the program's female swimmers and divers are fresh off a dominant, 156-99 showing against Washington State on Jan. 20. Utah will be looking to maintain the momentum that has not seen them drop a dual meet since October.
Summer Stanfield played a starring role for the Utes against WSU, claiming wins in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and she was also part of a victorious 400 medley relay team as well. It marked the second time in 2022-23 Stanfield has won three times in one meet and gives a her a win total of 14 to this point in her senior year.
Stanfield was far from the only Ute to reach the winner's circle against the Cougars, however.
Lily Milner swam into first place in the 100 backstroke,
Hilja Schimmel topped the field in the 100 breaststroke,
Katie Hale won the 50 free,
Krystal Lieu grabbed first in the 200 breaststroke and Woznick emerged victorious from the 100 free. Divers
Lizzy DeCecco and
Lexi Mills both posted qualifying scores in the 1m and 3m.
Looking Ahead
February for Utah's divers begins with the Air Force Diving Invitational on Feb. 2-4, while the squad's male swimmers will set their sights on a Feb. 10 trip to USC.
