SALT LAKE CITY – For the second straight day,
Evan VanBrocklin and
Summer Stanfield collected a pair of first-place finishes and Elias Peterson won the 1m and 3m in his first event as a Ute, helping the University of Utah swimming and diving team top the Colorado Mesa Mavericks by scores of 143-42 and 128-57 on Saturday afternoon at the Ute Natatorium.
"I thought our effort was good and we raced hard," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "Great attitudes again. Maybe not the fastest times of the year, but that's expected, but no one is complaining and everyone is buying in and pushing themselves mentally physically and emotionally. I was really happy with our efforts today and it was a great way to finish off winter break training."
In The Pool
Stanfield finished first in both the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 56.29 and 2:04.79, respectively. On the men's side, VanBrocklin claimed victories in those same events, completing the 100 fly in 49.90 and the 200 IM at 1:51.38.

On The Boards
In both men's diving events, Peterson topped the field by a wide margin and posted NCAA Championship qualifying scores. In the men's 1m, he piled up 372.60 points, the most by a Ute in the 1m this season and the program's fourth-highest mark all-time. That came after he started the day with a 3m performance that graded out at 349.35 and also put him atop the leaderboard. Right behind Peterson in both competitions was
Jake Suchowski, who recorded 297.90 points in the 3m and 302.40 in the 1m, which also meet the NCAA qualifying standard.
On the women's side,
Lexi Mills had the best day on the 3m, recording her own NCAA Championship qualifying score with 315.40 points, followed by
Lizzy DeCecco with 270.60 to take second. In the 1m, the Utes occupied all the spots on the podium and this time it was DeCecco who landed in first with a score of 264.40, then Mills at 262.45 and
Sydney Kowalski rounded out the top three with 235.50 points.
"The divers did really well," said coach
Richard Marschner. "I was really happy to see Jake put together a good meet. He dove really well. Elias was good and its his first collegiate meet in a pretty strange environment when you're coming from Sweden to this being in your first meet and he responded pretty well. The ladies did awesome, too. We're making good corrections off things and we've got a good two months ahead of us."
