It's been a busy stretch on snow all over the world for members of the Utah Ski Team, not only with the traditional RMISA schedule recently off and running, but a variety of other competitions taking place across the United States and in Europe.
Samuel Hendry and
Sophia Laukli have been in Europe and recently completed the seven-stage Tour de Ski. It was highlighted by Laukli's third-place result in the final stage, her first career FIS World Cup podium. The seventh stage of the Tour, a 10K freestyle, is generally considered the toughest course of the entire World Cup schedule because of its uphill climb.
"This result is really motivating and it's so fun to end the Tour on this race,"
Laukli said following the race. "Today topped it all off for sure and I'll savor this feeling forever!"
Hendry is also due praise for completing the Tour, believed to be among a limited number of Canadians to accomplish the feat.
In alpine racing, various Utes were in action last week at the Nor-Am Cup in Vermont. Utah had athletes competing in slalom on Jan. 3-4 and were scheduled to participate in giant slalom on Jan. 5-6, though the GS races were cancelled due to conditions. Men's racing took place at Burke Mountain with the women in action at Stratton. The Nor-Am races pit athletes against some of the best in the world and are generally regarded at a tier of competition second to only the World Cup.
Kaja Norbye clocked a 10
th place effort on day two of slalom, coming off
Michelle Kervén's 12
th place result on the first day--which included her winning the second run. In men's action,
Jeremy Mathers led Utah on the first day in 12
th and was followed on day two with
Raphael Lessard tabbing 16
th.
Utah's RMISA schedule continues this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14 with the Nordic portion of the Montana State Invitational, slated for Crosscut Mountain Sports Center. The alpine slate begins Jan. 26-27 at Snowbird with the Westminster Invitational; teams will compete in slalom on both days.
