SALT LAKE CITY – Two simultaneous meets are on the schedule for the University of Utah swimming and diving team this week, with some of the team's student-athletes heading for Grand Junction, Colo., the site of the CMU Invitational, which will take place from Wednesday through Saturday, while the rest of the squad travels to College Station, Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational, set for Wednesday to Friday.
"We've been training really hard this fall," said head coach
Jonas Persson, "and prepared the team the best possible way, so I'm very excited to see what we can do. It's gonna be a lot of fun, and the team is in really good spirit. We will face great competition, which is good for us. We will also know where we stand, as we are half way through the season."
In the Pool
The Utes enjoyed a weekend without a meet after taking home a pair of victories over UNLV on Nov. 4. On that day, Utah's swimmers claimed a season-high 17 wins and four different people collected multiple first place finishes.
Erin Palmer added to one of the highest win totals on the roster by snatching first-place in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and she's taken first in the latter race in all four of Utah's 2023 meets. Palmer also contributed to Utah's triumph in the 200 free relay.
Summer Stanfield boosted her victory total to six by besting the field in the 200 fly and the 200 free, while
Evan VanBrocklin can claim five triumphs in 2023-24 after swimming into the winner's circle in the 200 fly and the 200 free.
Brandon Miller picked up his first two wins of his 2023-24 campaign by collecting the top spot in the 200 back and 400 IM.
Utah's list of victors against the Rebels also included
Cameron Daniell,
Tomas Chocholaty,
Jakub Walter,
Jaek Horner,
Maddie Woznick,
Krystal Lieu,
Nick Chirafisi and
Jackson Kehler. Horner's win total for the year now stands at five, while Daniell has finished first in at least one race in three consecutive meets, having placed first in the 5K at the MPSF Open Water Championships and in the 500 free vs. Arizona.
On the Boards
Elias Petersen posted the day's highest scores in both the 1m and 3m against the Rebels, both of which surpassed the NCAA Championships Qualifying standard. This marked the second time in 2023-24 Petersen has finished first in both those events in a single meet and Petersen's accomplishments in October earned him the Pac-12 Men's Diver of the Month award.
Utah's female divers have also logged their fair share of victories, with
Holly Waxman finishing atop the leaderboard in the 1m and
Emilia Nilsson Garip recording a first-place finish in the 3m. Both Waxman and Nilsson Garip have multiple wins to their credit so far in 2023-24, with Nilsson Garip winning both the 1m and 3m on Oct. 27 vs. Arizona, while Waxman won the 1m on Oct. 7 against LSU.
"This week will serve as a sort of check in for us to see where we are and what we might need to work on going forward," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "The competition numbers aren't going to be huge but there will be a lot of high quality divers from the teams who are there and I think we'll be able to challenge for several top3 finishes this week."
