SALT LAKE CITY –
Kathryn Grant and
Elias Petersen each took first in both the 1m and 3m, but the University of Utah swimming and diving team suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of the Arizona State Sun Devils, falling by scores of 210.5-88.5 on the women's side and 232-66 in the men's competition on Monday inside the Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.
"We had a really big challenge today to swim against probably the best men's team in the country and one of the best women's teams," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "I think we did what we needed to do, which was step up to the challenge, race hard and focus on ourselves and be disciplined in our races even though we knew the competition was going to be really strong. Overall, I think it was a successful day even though it might not look like that on paper. For our team and where we are at this point, I think we did well and we should be happy with it."
In the Pool
Erin Palmer and
Norah Hay both collected first-place finishes for the home side, Palmer notching the initial victory for the Utes by clocking in at 22.93 in the 50 free. Hay snagged a win of her own in the 200 back, thanks to a time of 1:57.05 and teammate
Summer Stanfield was right behind her, finishing in 1:57.10.
Brandon Miller posted one of Utah's strongest swims in the 1000 free, placing second by putting up a time of 9:15.98 and Stanfield's mark of 1:50.15 earned her third in the 200 free, while Hay recorded a third-place finish in the 200 back in 54.67. Parker landed in third in the 100 back in 48.88, Miller took home third in the men's 200 back, touching the wall in 1:45.05, Stanfield put together another third-place showing in the 200 IM in 2:02.04 and the quartet of Palmer,
Lily Milner,
Maddie Woznick and Hay swam into second in the women's 400 free relay.
On the Boards
Grant and Petersen were both razor sharp from the beginning, with Grant piling 308.70 points in the women's 3m and Petersen finishing the men's 1m with a score of 348.98, both of which surpassed the NCAA Championships qualifying standard.
In the women's 1m, Grant was back atop the podium, crafting a mark of 289.73 and Petersen joined her at the top of the leaderboard with a point total of 378.60 in the men's 3m. Both scores surpassed the NCAA qualifying score and for Grant, this represented the first time she's collected two first-place finishes in one meet. Also reaching the NCAA standard was
Sydney Kowalski, who collected 227.25 points in the women's 1m.
"We did a really nice job today as we're pushing through some fatigue after a week away for mid-season," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "No one made any excuses and we just went out and executed very well under the circumstances. Truthfully, there's no reason we should have been as good as we were, so it's a testament to the team's resilience that they performed so well."
Looking Ahead
Utah's swimmers will be in Greensboro, N.C., the site of the US Open, which is scheduled for Nov. 29 – Dec. 2, while the squad's divers will pay a visit to the Big Al Invite, which will take place in Princeton, N.J. from Dec. 1 – 3.
