SALT LAKE CITY – In the midst of a busy season that's already seen more than 20 new marks added to the program record book, the University of Utah swimming and diving team is about to embark on another week of competition that will include a pair of meets, with a handful of the program's swimmers heading to the 2023 U.S. Open in Greensboro, N.C. from Wednesday through Saturday, while Utah's divers will be at the Big Al Invite, which will be held at the DeNunzio Pool in Princeton, N.J. from Friday through Sunday.
While this will be the Utes' first trip to the open, it is the third straight year they've traveled to Princeton and at the 2022 edition of this meet, Utah's divers posted a slew of NCAA Championship qualifying marks along with several milestone performances.
Kathryn Grant broke the pool record with a score of 282.40 in the platform, which also counted as the fourth-best mark in school history. Grant's 3m point total was the eighth-highest ever by a Ute, while
Holly Waxman recorded Utah's fifth-best score all-time in the 1m.
In the Pool
The roster of Utah swimmers making the trip to Greensboro will consist of
Evan VanBrocklin,
Brandon Miller,
Jakub Walter,
Baylor Lewis,
Parker McOmber, Matt Willcox,
Summer Stanfield,
Erin Palmer and
Norah Hay.
In Utah's most recent meet, which pit them against Arizona State, Hay and Palmer both collected first place finishes, while Hay, Stanfield, Miller, Walter and VanBrocklin posted NCAA Championship B Qualifying times when the Utes traveled to the Texas A&M Invitational. Miller also recorded multiple Olympic Trial cuts during the team's time in Texas and Palmer, Walter, Miller and VanBrocklin have all been among those adding new top 10 times to the school record book.
"I feel really good about this meet," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "We are taking nine swimmers that are all very competitive and have a chance to make an impact. It's one of the fastest meets in the world this year, as it is an Olympic year, so we are hoping we can perform and get some more Olympic trial cuts. I hope they're going to have a good time and enjoy the experience and learn from it and grow and come out better."
On the Boards
Emilia Nilsson Garip has already entrenched herself at the top of the program's all-time leaderboard in the 1m and the 3m, accomplishing both of those feats during the team's time in The Lone Star State and her scores in those events rank among the best performances in the country to this point in the season. When the Utes took on the Sun Devils,, however, it was
Kathryn Grant and
Elias Petersen who played starring roles, landing atop the podium in both events with scores that surpassed the NCAA Qualifying standard and Syndey Kowaski's point total in the 1m also beat the NCAA benchmark.
"This meet gives us an opportunity to get right back into competition coming off a pretty long Thanksgiving break," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "Princeton is probably the best team out in Zone A and the meet will have a few other strong teams to give us a challenge. We're hoping everyone is healthy enough to compete and if we have our full squad, I think we can duplicate, if not improve upon, our results from A&M."
