TUCSON, Ariz. – The Utah men's basketball team gave the No. 8 Arizona Wildcats a run late in the second-half but ultimately fell 88-62 inside McKale Center Thursday night.
Â
Baskets were a premium to start for both teams with Arizona just 1-of-7 to start while Utah was 2-of-7 before an ensuing shooting slump by the Utes saw Arizona go on a 10-0 run on the heels of hitting six-straight shots from the field to take an 18-9 lead at the 11:28 media mark.
Â
Despite
Branden Carlson scoring seven-straight baskets for Utah, the Wildcats were still red-hot from the floor out of the previous media break and hit 10-of-12 from field – which forced a Utah (17-10, 10-6 Pac-12) timeout with 7:14 remaining in the half. However, a late 7-2 run in the final 1:20 of the first frame saw Utah cut into UA's lead but still trailed 43-31.
Â
The Wildcats continued their hot shooting out of the break, pushing the Utah deficit to 54-34 before taking a 59-39 advantage heading into the first media break. Down 62-39,
Wilguens Jr. Exacte got the Utah offense going and scored 10 of its next 17 points to bring the Runnin' Utes within 68-56 of the Wildcats – which forced an Arizona (23-4, 12-4 Pac-12) timeout with 8:59 to play.
Â
However, that would be as close as the Utes would get the rest of the game as Arizona answered with a 13-3 run and never looked back to hand Utah its sixth loss of the year in Pac-12 play.
Â
Carlson led the Utes with a team-high 19 points while
Marco Anthony chipped in with 12 points and seven boards. Exacted was just shy of his season-high, tacking on 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting – including two from down range.
Â
