Both capture third as Utes compete in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Holly Waxman and Luke McDivitt both logged third-place finishes and NCAA Championship qualifying scores as the University of Utah diving team participated in the second day of competition at the Air Force Diving Invite, which was held inside the Cadet Natatorium on Friday.
"The team is having a great meet so far and we're doing exactly what I'd hoped," said diving coach Richard Marschner. "Holly is showing some incredible consistency with her diving as she continues to put up scores that will place really well during Pac-12's and NCAA zones and nationals."
Waxman got the day started by racking up 305.50 points in the 1m preliminary round, which was good enough for second place. Lizzy DeCecco finished the prelims in 13th, Lexi Mills placed 25th and Sydney Kowalski took 37th.
In the final, Waxman nudged her score up to 306.70, less than three points off her personal-best, and that was good enough to earn her a third-place finish.
The men's divers spent the day on the 3m and, much like Waxman, McDivitt got off to an excellent start, posting 390.30 points, which nearly topped his personal best of 393.20. Not far behind was Ben Smyth with 350.05 points, another NCAA qualifying score that put him fifth and Jake Suchowski's 306.80 points landed him in 12th. Elias Petersen ended the prelims in 14th and Jenner Pennock took 17th.
McDivitt posted a score of 373.75 in the final to record a third-place finish and Smyth bumped his mark up to 363.95 to end the evening in fifth. Suchowski improved in the final as well and his 311.35 points were a new personal-best and placed him 11th.
"Luke put on another incredible display on 3m and followed up his performance from last week with another great one today," said Marschner. "His 12-dive score would have actually had him in first place which is how we scored zones, so once again he showed some consistency, which is key. I also want to highlight Jake, as he was a bit of a surprise finalist and had the best meet of his career."
