DENVER, Colo. – The University of Utah Lacrosse program took on the No. 17 Denver Pioneers to open the season today, but struggled to get going offensively in the second half, falling 12-4.
Utah would make it a one-point game with under five minutes to play in the second quarter, but would hit a scoring drought in the second half that led to Denver going on a six-goal run for the win. The Utes finished the game with 34 shots, including 14 on goal with 18 ground balls and three caused turnovers.
GAME LEADERS
Junior
Jordan Hyde led the Utes with three goals on four shots on goal with junior
Tyler Bradbury also scoring three points with a team-high three assists. Redshirt freshman
Ryan Stines also got in on the action, scoring his first-career goal as a Ute.
Senior
Samuel Cambere led the team with three ground balls with junior
Joey Boylston, freshman
Nikko DiPonio and senior
Ruben Santana all contributing one caused turnover each.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Despite getting some good looks on goal to start the game and outshooting Denver 9-7 in the quarter, the Utes struggled to win face-offs early with Denver playing make-it, take-it lacrosse to earn a quick 3-0 lead with 7:37 to go.
Heading into the final few minutes, Utah earned an extra-man opportunity, capitalizing with its first goal of the game. Bradbury would find Stines open across the field with 2:15 to go with Stines finishing from 10 yards out, making it 3-1 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Hyde scored two of his three goals in the second quarter, starting with a 15-yarder on a cross-goal feed from Bradbury at the 11:46 mark to make it 4-2.
It would be Hyde again with 4:14 remaining in the quarter on a transition, no-look pass from
Cody Hart, cutting the Denver lead to just one-point. The Pioneers would answer though, sneaking one in with 3:18 to go to take a two-point lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
After going down by three to start the quarter, Hyde would once again bring the Utes to back within two, scoring his third goal of the game with Bradbury securing his third assist of the game with 10:08 on the clock.
Unfortunately for the Utes, it would be their final goal of the game with Denver scoring three unanswered to end the quarter with a 9-4 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Denver would outshoot Utah 13-8 in the fourth quarter, scoring its final three goals of the game for the 12-4 victory.
