FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The quartet of
Andrei Ungur,
Jaek Horner,
Ryan Garstang and
Finn O'Haimhirgin earned a bronze medal in the 200 medley relay to get the University of Utah men's swimming team off to a fast start on day one of the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships, which started on Wednesday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
"We had a great first night of the meet," said associate coach
Jos Smith. "It's always nice to get on the podium against this high level of competition. We have some great momentum going into tomorrow. We will continue to race tough and be aggressive."
Ungur, Horner, Garstang and O'Haimhirgin wasted no time securing Utah's first hardware of the meet, posting a time of 1:24.45 that put them in third, beating out a relay squad from USC. This represents the first Pac-12 medal for Garstang and Horner and the second for O'Haimhirgin and Ungur who were members of the Utah 200 medley relay team that placed second at the conference meet in 2021.
In the 800 free relay finals, the Utes placed sixth, as a squad consisting of
Marko Kovacic,
Evan VanBrocklin,
Noah Carlson, and
Davis Stachelek clocked in at 6:30.46.
Through those first two events, Utah owns the No. 2 spot in the team rankings with a total of 146 points.
During the day's time trials, Baylor Lewis earned a spot in the Utah record book by posting a time of 54.63 in the 100 breaststroke, good enough for ninth all-time.
Looking Ahead
Four event finals are on the docket for Thursday, including the 500 free, the 50 free, the 200 free relay and the 200 individual medley.
