SALT LAKE CITY – Utah divers
Holly Waxman and
Kathryn Grant are both just a couple days away from competing at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, which are scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
Both divers secured their spots at nationals with phenomenal showings at the NCAA Diving Zone E Championships and earned the right to compete in multiple events in Knoxville. With Waxman competing in the 1m, 3m and platform events and Grant contending in the 1m and on the platform, this represents just the second time the Utes have had multiple female divers reach the NCAA Championships and the first time they'll have two women competing in multiple events. There will only be eight other schools at nationals who will be participating in more diving events than Utah.
Waxman's season has included posting the second-highest scores in Utah history in the 1m and the 3m, with both of those scores coming in a win over BYU in January. At zones, Waxman spent the first day locking up a nationals spot in the 3m with a score of 322.60, then snagged spots in the platform on day two and the 1m on day three. A year ago, Waxman competed in the 1m and the 3m at the NCAA Championships and in the former event, she piled up 279.35 points, a mark that placed her 21st and represented the second-highest finish in school history in that event.
For Grant, this will be her first time competing on this stage and the NCAA Championships will represent the final chapter in a fantastic freshman year. Grant has already secured spots on the program's all-time top 10 lists in the 1m, 3m and platform and she improved on her best score in the 1m at zones, piling up 297.60 points for a new personal best. It was that performance that punched Grant's ticket to the NCAA Championships.
