The First Pitch: Things to Know
It's a return to the Lone Star State for the Utah Baseball team as the Utes head back to Texas for a three-game series at UTSA from March 3-5. This will be the first leg of the Utes' Spring Break trip, which also sends
Gary Henderson's club to Cal State Fullerton (March 7) before beginning Pac-12 Conference play at Washington (March 10-12).
- In the recorded all-time series between Utah and UTSA, the Utes hold a slight advantage with a 4-3 lead. Utah last faced UTSA during the 2017 season in San Antonio, taking two of three from the Roadrunners including a 7-1 result in the rubber game. Dallas Carroll was 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBI in that contest to help Utah win the series.
- The Utes won their final three games during last weekend's four-game trip to Texas, including two victories at the Kleberg Bank College Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Utah fell in the tournament opener to Houston, but bounced back with victories over Incarnate Word and the host Islanders to wrap up the weekend.
- Outfielder Elijha Hammill has come on the scene as a redshirt freshman, reaching base safely in all eight games this season. Hammill, who owns a .333 batting average, has six RBI on the year and was a double short of the cycle in the season-opener at San Francisco on Feb. 17.
- Two-way player TJ Clarkson hit .400 during the Corpus Christi weekend, belting three home runs and driving in nine runs. He also pitched 2.2 innings during the final game of the trip against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a performance that will go down as one of the most memorable two-way games by a Ute in recent memory.
- Although the Utes fell short of reaching the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament, the relatively young club showed signs of promise for the future. Utah (26) had a nine-win improvement from the previous season, set Pac-12 era program records in seven offensive categories and had the program's first-ever ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner in first baseman Alex Baeza.
- Returning catcher/infielder Davis Cop, plus infielder Landon Frei, were named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention team last season. Cop also was tabbed Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference.
