USAFA, Colo. – The University of Utah Lacrosse team handed Air Force its first conference loss of the season at Falcon Stadium today with the Utes walking away with an 18-11 victory on the road. The Utes are 3-0 in ASUN play and 4-4 overall this season.
Utah outshot the Falcons 54-49 with 33 shots on goal, also coming away with 38 ground balls compared to Air Force's 28.
GAME LEADERS
Junior attackman
Jordan Hyde led the team in points with six, scoring five goals and an assist, also adding three ground balls.
Carson Moyer added a hat trick with an assist with
Josh Rose contributing a season-high three assists.
Ryan Stines,
Cody Hart and
Koa Todd also scored two goals each with hart adding three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Cole Brams led the Utes in ground balls with nine, also winning 16 faceoffs and grabbing a caused turnover.
Joey Boylston and
Dominic Mata led the team in caused turnovers with two each with the duo combining for five ground balls.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes put away seven goals in the first quarter, only allowing three, with six different players finding the back of the net. After the Falcons took an early 2-0 lead, the Utes went on a 7-1 run to end the quarter.
Utah's scoring started with a goal from Stines, followed by Moyer going one-on-one with his defender to score low and to the near corner. Rose found Hyde wide open in front of the crease to tie the score 3-3 with 4:31 remaining in the quarter with
Cody Hart officially giving Utah the lead at the 2:44 mark.
Moyer, Bradbury and
Colby Plotts would score Utah's final three goals of the first quarter in the final two minutes, giving the Utes a four-point advantage heading into the second.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes extended its lead in the second quarter with
Jared Andreala and Todd sinking shots from deep, putting Utah up 9-3 with 11:37 on the clock. Moyer would go on to score his second goal of the game with 9:15 to go in the quarter, finding the back of the net after attacking straight down the middle of the field.
Unfortunately, Moyer's goal would be the final goal for the Utes in the quarter with Utah hitting a scoring drought, allowing Air Force to make it a three-point game heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Early in the third quarter, Air Force made it a one-point game, scoring two unanswered goals to cut the Utah lead to 10-9 with 10:43 on the clock. The Utes would counter though with a 4-0 run, sparked by an over-the-shoulder shot from
MJ McMahon.
Hyde and Moyer would combine for the final three goals of the quarter for the Utes, sending Utah into the final quarter with a 14-10 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The scoring continued with 12:00 to go in the final quarter with Stines putting in his second goal of the game, spinning off his defender to hit the goal in the low corner. It would spout off another 4-0 run for the Utes with Hyde, Hart and Todd adding to the Utes' lead.
Air Force would score in the final minute of the game, but the Utes would still finish with the 18-11 win on the road.
