SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Lacrosse team remained undefeated at Ute Field and in ASUN play as they took down the No. 10 Jacksonville Dolphins, 18-15 in Salt Lake City Friday night. Utah is 4-0 in league play and 5-4 overall.
It is the second straight year that the Utes have beaten Jacksonville when they are ranked in the top-10 with the program's highest-ranked win coming against the Dolphins in 2022 when they ranked No. 8. It also ended Jacksonville's eight-game win streak with the Utes coming away with its fourth-straight victory.
The win was Utah's third ranked win in program history. Utah edged the Dolphins in shots (47-45) tonight, also finishing the game with 37 ground balls for its fourth consecutive game with 30+ ground balls.
GAME LEADERS
The Utes were led in points and goals by redshirt freshman
Ryan Stines who scored a career-high five goals and six points (5 goals, 1 assist). Junior
Jared Andreala chipped in a career-best tying four goals with junior
Carson Moyer also contributing two goals to the stat line.
Junior
Tyler Bradbury led the team in assists with two, also scoring a goal for three points with a total of 10 different Utes scoring against the Dolphins.
Once again, faceoff specialist and midfielder
Cole Brams led the program in ground balls with seven, also adding 14 faceoff wins and an assist.
Colby Plotts and
Joey Boylston both grabbed two caused turnovers each with Plotts finishing with four ground balls and Boylston grabbing three.
Freshman
Colin Lenskold also put together another gritty performance in goal, finishing the game with 17 saves with 15 goals against.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes and Dolphins went back-and-forth to start the game, but Utah quickly took control, jumping out to a 4-1 lead with 9:57 on the clock. Stines got the Utes going with a no-look, over the shoulder shot to put Utah on the board, followed by goals from
Koa Todd, Moyer and
Jordan Hyde for the three-point advantage.
Jacksonville would find its way back onto the scoreboard with 9:30 to go in the first quarter, but it would be their last goal of the period with Utah taking off on a 3-0 run to head into the second. Moyer scored his second goal of the game on a high shot to the corner, followed by lasers from Andreala and
MJ McMahon to make it 7-2 at the end of the first.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Utah would extend its lead to 10 points at the 6:06 mark in the second quarter after continuing its scoring run with five unanswered goals to start the period. Andreala would find the back of the net on a bounce shot to start things off, followed by two goals from
Cody Hart and Stines for a 12-2 lead.
Stines would make it 13-4 at the 2:25 mark with Jacksonville scoring one more before time ran out, sending the Utes up eight at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Utah's goal with 2:25 to go in the second quarter would be its last until the fourth quarter with the Utes unable to find the back of the net in the third.
It allowed Jacksonville to creep back into the game, scoring three goals in the period to make it 13-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Jacksonville made it a four-point game with 13:24 to go, but the Utes would have an answer once again, scoring three-straight from Andreala,
Josh Rose and Stines to make it 18-11 with 8:45 left on the clock.
The Dolphins continued to chip away at the Utah lead late, bringing things to within three with under a minute to play, but Utah's defense stayed strong with Lenskold coming up with an integral save down the stretch to give Utah the possession back as time ticked away, sealing the win.
