Utah posts slew of personal bests on day three of Pac-12 Championships
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Andrei Ungur won a silver medal and set a school record in the 100 backstroke and Jaek Horner broke the program record in the 100 breaststroke for the University of Utah men's swimming team on day three of the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
Ungur shattered his own program record with a time of 45.00, topping his previous best by 0.05 and snatching Utah's first silver medal of the competition. Ungur's mark also counted as an NCAA Championships Qualifying B time. This is his second Pac-12 silver medal after he earned his first at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships.
Horner's new program-best of 51.78 earned him a fourth-place finish in the 100 breast, as well as counting as an NCAA qualifying B time. Just like Ungur, Horner surpassed his own school record, beating his previous personal best by 0.10.
Horner wasn't the only Ute who excelled in the 100 breast. Matt Wilcox took second in the C-Final with a mark of 53.39, putting him fourth all-time in the Utah record-book. Finn O'Haimhirgin's new personal-best of 53.50 in prelims was good enough for fifth-best all-time and he would place 16th on the 100 breast overall leaderboard.
The day started with the 400 individual medley and three different Utes posted new personal-bests in that race. In the prelims, Brandon Miller reached the finish line in 3:47.59, the second-fastest 400 IM time in program history and he would later take 16th in the final. Evan VanBrocklin's finals time of 3:48.85 put him 15th and also counted as fifth-fastest in program history. Baylor Lewis added one more top 10 mark in the 400 IM, touching in 3:51.07 in prelims, ninth-best in school history and he finished the finals in 20th.
One more top 10 time came courtesy of Ryan Garstang in the 100 back. His time of 46.67 in a time trial goes down as fourth-best ever by a Ute.
Looking Ahead
One day of work remains for the Utes in Federal Way and six more finals are set for Saturday. On that list are the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 free relay.
