PISCATAWAY, N.J. – In a battle until the end, the University of Utah Lacrosse team put together a strong rally in the fourth quarter at No. 8 Rutgers today, but a third quarter slump would end up being costly as the Utes fell 18-14.
Utah outshot the Scarlet Knights 49-45 with 27 of its shots being on goal. The Utes also posted a season-high 43 ground balls, which ranks as the fourth-most in program history.
GAME LEADERS
Junior
Tyler Bradbury led the Utes in points against the Scarlet Knights, posting three goals and two assists, also recording two ground balls and a caused turnover. Redshirt freshman
Ryan Stines also added four goals on four shots on goal with junior
MJ McMahon finishing with a season-high three assists for the second-straight game.
Senior faceoff specialist and midfielder
Cole Brams racked up a team-high seven ground balls and 16 faceoff wins with junior
Josh Rose contributing six ground balls as well. Sophomore
Colby Plotts also put up a career-high six ground balls while junior
Jared Andreala had a career-best five.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes' first goal of the game came on a transition play after
Colin Lenskold made his first save out of four in the quarter, allowing Utah to counter with Plotts finding Stines for the early advantage.
Utah would take a 3-1 lead with goals from
Zach Chandler and Brams with 4:44 to go in the quarter, but Rutgers would counter with back-to-back goals to tie things up heading into the second.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Stines would score his second goal of the game to start the second quarter, giving Utah a 4-3 lead with 13:14 on the clock on an over the shoulder shot that hit in the high corner. The back-and-forth would continue though with Rutgers scoring two unanswered with 8:08 on the clock.
Andreala tied things up 5-5 with 7:23 remaining in the quarter after battling his way through a double-team, but the Scarlet Knights would find the net twice again to take the two-point lead into the final five minutes of the half.
Koa Todd ended up scoring with 2:43 on the clock to make it a one-point game with the Utes holding Rutgers off for the remainder of the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes' goal with 2:43 on the clock in the second quarter would be its last until the fourth, allowing Rutgers to go on a 6-0 run in the third for a 13-6 lead. The Utes had five turnovers in the quarter, including four that would lead to goals for the Scarlet Knights.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Despite the third quarter struggle, Utah wouldn't give in, clawing back into the game with three unanswered goals, including back-to-back scores from Bradbury to make it 14-9 at the 11:03 mark.
After Rutgers answered with a 5-1 run to take a 18-11 lead with 4:11 to go in the game, Utah's grit pushed through. At the 3:54 mark,
Samuel Cambere scored a poll goal to make it 18-12, followed by Bradbury's third goal of the game with 2:26 on the clock to make it a five-point game.
Utah outscored Rutgers 8-5 in the fourth quarter, including Todd finding the back of the net with two minutes left in the game to make it 18-14, but the gap wouldn't be closed with the Utes suffering the loss.

Utah returns to Salt LAX City on Saturday, March 18 when they host Bellarmine to open ASUN play. The game will take place at Ute Field and will start at 7 p.m. MT.
