Utes seek to build on strong Pac-12 Championships showing
SALT LAKE CITY – After a performance at the Pac-12 Championships that earned them five total medals, the University of Utah diving team is preparing for another difficult test, as they'll compete at the NCAA Diving Zone E Championships on March 6-8 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Holly Waxman and Elias Petersen were two of the stars for Utah at the conference meet. Petersen medaled in both the 1m and 3m, posting a mark of 337.95 in the former event and a 423.25 in the latter. That 3m score was a personal-best for Petersen and also the fourth-highest score in Utah history. Petersen is now in the top five all-time in the 1m and the 3m, having set the 1m record by racking up 394.05 points against BYU on Jan. 27.
Waxman also left the Pac-12 Championships with multiple medals, finishing on the podium in the 1m and the 3m, while setting a personal-best on the platform. Waxman's first event was the 1m and she not only picked up a bronze medal, but her score of 311.15 in the final was her best ever and narrowly missed breaking the school record. She posted a mark of 322.65 in the 3m final to reel in another bronze, making her the first female diver from Utah to win multiple conference medals. She then added one more milestone in the platform with a score of 276.90 that is Utah's sixth-best all-time.
Luke McDivitt was able to capture a medal at the conference meet, putting up a score of 350.84 that earned him the third spot on the podium. Another strong showing was put together by Kathryn Grant, who competed in the 1m and 3m finals and won the platform B-final with 265.20 points.
At last year's zones meet, Waxman was razor sharp, punching her tickets to the NCAA Championships in the 1m and the 3m, posting a personal best in the latter event with a score of 310.98. Ben Smyth and Jenner Pennock both also earned bids to the NCAA Championships with their work on the 1m.
