SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 20 University of Utah Lacrosse team secured its second-straight ASUN regular season title with its 19-12 victory over Cleveland State tonight, remaining undefeated at Ute Field for the second year in a row. Utah is 9-4 overall this season and 8-0 in ASUN play.
With Utah's 30 points tonight against the Vikings, they secured another school record, securing the single-season points record with 341. Utah has now scored 30-or-more points in four straight games and in six total this season.
Utah outshot the Vikings 60-41, including 35 shots on goal, also recording 39 ground balls to their 23. Utah also caused nine of Cleveland State's 16 turnovers with Utah only producing 11 turnovers in the game.
GAME LEADERS
Junior
Jared Andreala led the Utes tonight in points, scoring a career-high six with a career-high tying four goals and two assists. Redshirt freshman
Ryan Stines added five points on three goals and two assists while junior
Tyler Bradbury contributed a season-high tying four goals.
Senior
Cole Brams finished the game with seven ground balls and 18 faceoff wins (18-of-33) with junior
Josh Rose also recording five ground balls. Senior
Samuel Cambere notched a team-high tying two caused turnovers with sophomore
Tyler Schifko also producing two caused turnovers for a career-high.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
It was a defensive battle to start the game with both teams combining for just five points in the first quarter. The Vikings struck first with 14:24 on the clock, but Utah answered less than a minute later on a high corner goal from
Carson Moyer to tie things up.
Cleveland State would take its second lead of the game at the 10:50 mark, keeping Utah out of the back of the net until
Tyler Bradbury tied it up 2-2 with 4:35 to go in the quarter. The Vikings would take a 3-2 lead one minute remaining, sending Utah trailing into the second quarter for the first time since non-conference play.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The back-and-forth would continue in the second quarter as both teams seemed to have an answer for one another. Hyde tied the game 3-3 at the 10:29 mark, but Cleveland State would reclaim the lead just moments later at 4-3.
The Utes would find a little momentum with two unanswered goals from Stines and Bradbury, but with 4:35 to go, the Vikings would tie the score once more, sending the game into halftime even at 5-5.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
After Cleveland State took a 6-5 lead with 13:39 on the clock to start the third quarter, the Utes were looking for a spark – and found one in Andreala. The junior would spark a 4-0 run for the Utes with three of the four goals coming from his stick for a 9-6 lead.
The Vikings would score its seventh goal with 5:11 remaining in the quarter, but
Koa Todd and
MJ McMahon would counter with two straight to send Utah into the final quarter up 11-7.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Bradbury scored his third goal of the game with 14:11 to go, giving Utah a five-point lead before Cleveland State cut things back down to four. The two teams once again trader goals with Utah holding a 13-9 lead with 10:19 on the clock, poised for its next run.
The Utes would score two unanswered off the sticks of Hyde and Todd, but the Vikings countered with two goals of their own to make it a four-point game with 6:45 remaining. Utah would end the game on a 4-1 run with goals from Stines,
Ruben Santana, Bradbury and Andreala to secure the 19-12 victory and an undefeated record at Ute Field.
