OREM, Utah –
Matt Flaharty homered for the second time this season and
Karson Bodily smacked his third triple—highlighting six extra base hits for Utah—but a five-run eighth inning for Utah Valley proved too much to overcome as the Utes fell, 13-7, on Tuesday night at UCCU Ballpark.
The Utes now prepare for their final Pac-12 Conference series of the regular season, hosting Oregon at Smith's Ballpark in a series beginning on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. MT.
Jayden Kiernan extended his on-base streak to 13 straight games and on-base streak to 33 games, and five Utes had multi-hit performances toward the team's 13 total hits on the night.
TJ Clarkson and Flaharty each drove in two runs and
Kaden Carpenter, Clarkson,
Davis Cop and
Bruer Webster each doubled in the game.
Utah grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Clarkson followed Cop's double with a two-bagger of his own. Clarkson put the 0-2 pitch into shallow right field, rolling along the line and scoring Cop.
Flaharty's dinger came in the second inning and swelled the Utes' lead to 3-0. Carpenter led off with a walk, then Flaharty took the first pitch for a strike, then drilled the 0-1 to right center field and past the scoreboard.
UVU got two runs back in its half of the second inning on a two-run homer.
That came out in the wash though when Utah netted a run in both the third and fourth innings. Carpenter dropped a single into right allowing Bodily score after his triple. Then in the fourth, Webster came in with a run when Clarkson popped a single through the left side—giving the Utes a 5-2 upper hand.
But the Wolverines would bring the score all-square at five with a three-run fifth—stringing together four hits and a bases-loaded walk. UVU added three more in the sixth.
Utah scratched a run across amidst a double play in the seventh, and took advantage of a UVU error in the eighth to pull within 8-7. In the home half of the eighth, the Wolverines pushed across five to bring the game to its eventual final score.
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola took the loss for the Utes.
