NEW YORK – Utah Football tight ends Brant Kuithe and Thomas Yassmin have been named to the 2023 John Mackey Award Watch List, given annually to the nation's most outstanding tight end.
The award is voted on by the John Mackey Award Selection Committee each year with players on the Watch List exhibiting the traits of a "true tight end." Kuithe has also earned spots on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, the preseason All-Pac-12 first-team and the Athlon Sports preseason All-America team.
Kuithe enters the season as a three-time All-Pac-12 selection, the only active tight end in the league to have earned all-conference three times in their career. He has played in 51 career games with 26 starts, ranking in the top-10 all-time as a Ute in career receptions (148), receiving yards (1,882) and receiving touchdowns (16).
His career receiving numbers lead all active FBS tight ends entering the 2023 season while he is also one of three active Power Five tight ends to have over 150 career rushing yards. The Katy, Texas, native has 17 carries for 162 rushing yards and four touchdowns, being one of just two Power Five tight ends with four or more rushing scores.
Yassmin, who had never played the sport of football until he stepped foot on campus in 2018, has seen action in 42 games at Utah with six starts in 2022. He averaged 23.2 yards per catch last season, scoring five of his six touchdowns in the final six games. The Sydney, Australia, native finished last season with 13 catches for 301 yards and six scores, recording a career-high 81 receiving yards on just two catches with a 60-yard touchdown in Utah's Pac-12 title win over USC.
Yassmin came to Utah after playing rugby at The Scots College in New South Wales. He was named to the Australian Schools Barbarians all-star team that played Fiji and New Zealand at the Tri Nations Series in 2017. He redshirted at Utah in 2018 before earning playing time on special teams in 2019 and 2020.
As two of the most versatile tight ends in the Pac-12 and the FBS this season, Kuithe and Yassmin have also played an integral part in blocking for one of the best rushing offenses in the country since stepping foot on campus in 2018. In back-to-back years, Utah's offense has ranked in the top-15 nationally and in the top-two in the league in rushing offense while also sitting in the top-20 in the FBS and top-three in the Pac-12 in sacks allowed.
