SALT LAKE CITY and LOS ANGELES – University of Utah right-handed pitcher
Cam Day, a native of nearby Layton, Utah, has signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Day embarks on the next step in his baseball journey after spending the 2022 and '23 seasons with the Utes.
Â
He is the third Ute to sign a pro contract this Summer, following in the footsteps of fellow right-handers
Zac McCleve (Tampa Bay) and
Blake Whiting (Milwaukee).
Â
Day came to the Utes following a star career at Layton High School under longtime Lancers coach Robert Ferneau. He was named Deseret News 6A Player of the Year and ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 1 player in Utah for the Class of 2021.
Â
He went on to made 31 appearances during his two seasons with the Utes, including 25 starts. His career ledger sits at 117 innings pitched, sparked by earning the Sunday spot in the starting rotation during his freshman season. Day along with fellow rookie
Jaden Harris combined for 18 starts in Pac-12 Conference games that year—it was the most freshman starts in conference games of any team in the league.
Â
His first collegiate win came in Utah's 2022 rubber game victory over Washington. Later in 2022, Day's longest collegiate start came against then-No. 2 ranked Oregon State, when he went seven innings in another rubber game matchup. He also pitched with Utah looking for road sweeps at Washington State and USC; he received a no-decision up in Pullman and did not allow an earned run despite a tough-luck loss to the Trojans.
Â
In 2023, Day made 11 starts and also pitched key relief innings in six other games. He was named the Opening Day starter and fired a career-best eight strikeouts in that outing at San Francisco, helping Utah to its second straight season-opening win.
