SAN FRANCISCO – Coming off another incredible defensive performance across the board for Utah vs. UCLA, defensive end
Jonah Elliss and linebacker
Karene Reid have earned a pair of Pac-12 weekly awards. The league announced on Monday that Elliss has been named Pac-12 Defensive Line Player of the Week, while Reid was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
Elliss had a career day at defensive end, putting up 10 tackles, 5.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks—each his most as a Ute. It included 2.5 sacks during the fourth quarter, bringing him to an FBS-leading 5.5 sacks on the season. Elliss' TFL performance ranks tied for fourth-most in program history for a single game and his sack total shares eighth-most by a Ute.
Â
Prior to Elliss on Saturday, no Pac-12 player had recorded 5.0 TFL in a game since former Ute Devin Lloyd accomplished the feat in 2021 at Stanford. His 3.5-sack performance was the first in the Pac-12 since 2017.
Â
Reid's nine tackles vs. the Bruins were a season-high for the native of American Fork, Utah, with his two pass breakups resetting a career-best. On the very first play from scrimmage, he sparked the Utes and the capacity crowd inside Rice-Eccles Stadium with a 21-yard interception touchdown—the first game-opening pick-six by a Ute since 2016.
Â
Reid had three of his nine tackles during the first quarter, while the Utah defense held UCLA to 30 total yards in the opening period.
Â
As a team, Utah had 11 TFL and seven sacks on the day, both the most for the Utes since the 2022 Pac-12 Championship vs. USC. The Utes' defense held UCLA to just nine rushing yards on Saturday, tied for eighth-fewest in school history.
