SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's swimming and diving team took advantage of the opportunity to pocket a win in their first meet of 2024 on Jan. 5 and, after a two-week break, they'll be back in action on Friday for a meeting with the Wyoming Cowboys at 2 p.m. in Green River, Wyo.
"I'm excited about the meet and I think it's going to be a great opportunity for our guys to get up and race," said Persson. "Wyoming is a great team and very well coached team and our guys will have a great challenge ahead of them. It's going to be nice to get back into some competition before we have our last two dual meets coming up in a few weeks."
This will be Utah's first time tangling with the Cowboys since Dec. of 2016, when the sides also locked horns in Green River. The Utes earned a 171-129 triumph on that day, with seven different swimmers posting first-place finishes and both of the day's relays going to the Utes as well. On the boards, the Connor Cain aided Utah's victory by claiming first in the 1m. The last time Wyoming defeated Utah came in Dec. of 2015.
Utah's first win after the new year came at the expense of Colorado Mesa and the men's squad's list of winners included
Matthew Dedering in the 150 free,
Jaek Horner, who put up a victory in the 50 breast and
Will Woodall, who touched first in the 50 free. Horner also opened the meet by helping the Utes snatch the top spot in the 800 free relay and Dedering and Woodall abetted their team in finishing the meet by besting the competition in the 500 free relay. For Horner, he's racked up seven individual wins in 2023-24.
Coach
Jonas Persson also saw
Marko Kovacic win the 150 fly against CMU,
Baylor Lewis swim into first in the 150 breast,
Dylan Becker grab a victory in the 400 free and
Jackson Kehler outpace the field in the 50 fly. Kehler's performance was his second victory of 2023-24, as he also placed first in the 100 fly against UNLV on Nov. 4.
