SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's tennis program is set to head to Ann Arbor, Michigan this weekend for two matches in the ITA Kickoff. The Utes will face off against Michigan on Friday and either Purdue or Arkansas on Saturday.

FIRST SERVE
The Utes will compete in two matches in Ann Arbor, Michigan this weekend. First, facing off against the Wolverines on Friday morning Jan. 26, Utah will then take on either Purdue or Arkansas on Saturday Jan. 27.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah faced Idaho State at home on Sunday Jan. 21, posting a 7-0 sweep. The Utes found success in doubles with
Ana Luiza Cruz and
Marcela Lopez winning 6-0, while
Sara Akid and
Kat Lyman clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory.
Utah maintained momentum throughout singles, with Emma Kamper grabbing the first victory 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot. Next to finish was Lyman, who defeated her opponent on the fifth court 6-2, 6-0. Clinching the match victory for the Utes, Kaila Barksdale collected a 6-3, 6-2 victory on the No. 2 court. Cruz posted another Utah victory in the No. 6 spot 6-2, 6-1, with Yuhan Liu staking claim to a 7-5, 6-2 win on the third court. Lopez secured the final victory with a nail-biting tiebreaker in the No. 1 spot, winning 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.
IN THE RANKS
At the conclusion of fall action, Utah's
Marcela Lopez was ranked No. 55 in the country after claiming a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play.
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women's tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 48-41 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera's leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against Cal and a remarkable triumph over No. 16 Washington, marking their highest-ranked victory in the Pac-12 era. Also during the 2023 season, Mortera led the Utes to the most Pac-12 wins since 2015. In the Fall 2023 slate, Mortera's squad found success in the ITA Regionals, with
Emma Kamper staking claim to the singles B draw and
Marcela Lopez claiming second in the singles main draw, sending her to nationals.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The upcoming match marks the first meeting between Utah and Michigan in women's tennis. The Wolverines head into the weekend 1-1, losing their season opening match Jan. 19 against No. 5 Oklahoma State 2-4. Michigan then claimed their first victory against No. 13 Oklahoma, 4-3 Jan. 21.
SCOUTING PURDUE
Utah has faced Purdue twice, falling in each match. The two last saw each other in Jan. 2001, where the Boilermakers grabbed a close 4-3 win over the Utes. Purdue will head into the weekend boasting a 3-0 record, taking down Ball State 7-0, Miami University 5-2, and Xavier 7-0.
SCOUTING ARKANSAS
The Razorbacks will enter the weekend 2-0 after claiming two victories in a doubleheader against Bradley Jan. 20. Arkansas swept both matches, winning 4-0 in the morning and 5-0 in the afternoon.
NEXT UP
Utah will next host BYU for a rivalry match at home on Friday, Feb. 9. The Utes will then head to Denver to play on the road Friday, Feb. 16.
