SALT LAKE CITY – After a long, but eventful summer, the University of Utah swimming and diving team will finally kick start their 2024-2025 season in Grand Junction, Colo. on Friday and Saturday at the Colorado Mesa University Intermountain Shootout.
This is the second season the Utes make the trip to open their season, after traveling to CMU last year for the same event. The men's squad participated in its first meet of the season at the 2014 Intermountain Shootout, but the Utes didn't return again until 2016.
In Grand Junction, both the men and women's squads will swim against CMU men and women, BYU men and women and the CSU Pueblo women.
"I'm very excited about this season," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "It's my third year as head coach and we have two great freshmen classes and some really fast transfers whom joined our team."

New Year, New Staff
In addition to some new faces in the pool, Persson also added a new coach to his staff.
Former Auburn swimmer,
Aly Tetzloff was hired to the Ute staff in May after a busy couple years at Florida Gulf Coast University. In her final year, she helped the Eagles post a perfect 5-0 record in conference, then collect nine medals at the ASUN Championships. Tetzloff joined the staff at FGCU after a phenomenal career in the pool for Auburn, achieving All-American status 14 times for the Tigers in a variety of disciplines. The Crown Point, Indiana native competed professionally as well, after competing in both the 2016 and 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Head diving coach
Richard Marschner is back for his 15
th season with the Utes and brought assistant dive coach
Gabrielle Logozzo back for her third season.
Associate swim coach and primary middle-distance coach
Jos Smith is back for his seventh season, with assistant swim coach and Utah alum
Brody Lewis starting his third season as the head of the breaststroke group.
Jordan Taylor, assistant swim and sprint group coach is beginning his second season in Utah.
Big (XII) Changes
The Utes are in their debut season as members of the Big 12 Conference, after competing in the Pac-12 Conference for 13 years. The Big 12 is the fourth conference the Utes have competed in since the program's inception as members of the WAC in 1982. Their debut season as a program was marked with a 3-8-0 record, but then jumped to the men's squad taking fifth at Pac-12 Championships in 2011.
"I think our schedule for competing and our training schedule set us up well to have great success this year," said Persson. "Joining the Big 12 is certainly a big change, but it's a great change."
With the new conference, comes new rivals. The Utes will swim against two lone-star state rivals, University of Houston, the runners-up in the Big 12 Conference meet last year, and Texas Christian University. Still meeting old foes, Utah is scheduled to face-off with long-time rival BYU, but now at a conference level and previous conference rivals Arizona and Arizona State.
"I'm very excited about this season. It's my third year as head coach and we have two great freshmen classes and some really fast transfers whom joined our team," said Persson. "We have a tremendous coaching staff and support staff to help us and our teams are excited."
Looking Ahead
The next meet on the docket for the Utes will be in Tucson, Ariz. against the University of Arizona Wildcats, Oct. 25 and 26 at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
