Plus…crunching some numbers before Utah faces Arizona State
SALT LAKE CITY – The play of the program's special teams has served a key role for the University of Utah football team as the squad has gotten off to a 4-1 start in 2024, with the Utes ranking in the top five in the Big 12 in net punting and kicker Cole Becker climbing into the top 10 in total points and made field goals.
One of the key cogs on both the punt and field goal units is senior long snapper JT Greep, who recently reached 350 snaps in his Utah career and earned a spot on the Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List.
UtahUtes.com had a chance to sit down with Greep recently to discuss his play so far in 2024 and how he grew into one of the nation's best long snappers.
How would you assess your performance so far this season?
I think it's a good start. There are definitely areas I want to improve, but I think that's with anyone on the team. I like where its been, but I think it could definitely be better.
How do you try to make sure your mechanics are on point?
I would say I know my mechanics pretty well at this point to where I can snap and tell you in two seconds what went wrong or what was good about, but also, coach Cook is our new special teams analyst. He knows my form well enough to know where I miss and normally you have the same miss or same mistake, so its pretty easy to tell right away.
What was your reaction when you found out you were on the watch list for the Patrick Mannelly Award?
Very excited. That's been one of my goals since it became a thing. Now its my senior year and I'm on it, its great to feel.
Was your tackle in the Arizona game the hardest hit you've laid on someone since you've been here?
I would say second. The Florida game last year, that was definitely my biggest hit so far.
How did you make the decision that long snapping was something you wanted to learn and excel at?
I think it was eighth grade. I played tackle football for a couple years before that, but I was playing flag football at the time. My dad's buddy, his kids were at Washington State and Fresno State and my dad said we were going over to Upland High School. I did it once and didn't like it that much. After three months, my dad's buddy kept calling and saying I needed to go out to this trainer, Matt Wigley. I went out there on a Sunday and I think I went back every Sunday through my senior year after that.
Was there one specific thing about that process that was the most difficult to learn?
Not really. I think the start was the hardest. I think the first three times I snapped, my hips cramped every time. After that, it was just refining mechanics. It's almost like a swing. You'll have a hitch here and there and its just being able to watch film and fix it so it doesn't become a bigger problem.
Who has a better mustache, you or Jack Bouwmeester?
I think me. Jack's is a little lighter. He grows it out a little longer than me sometimes, but I don't like it that long.
Crunchin' The Numbers Stats to pass around with the pigskin during Saturday's tailgate...
109.4 – rushing yards per game for Micah Bernard so far in 2024. If he maintains that for a full season, it would put him ninth in program history and would be the highest figure for a Utah halfback since Zack Moss in 2018.
55 – Consecutive successful extra points by Utah kicker Cole Becker.
55 – Points scored by Utah in their 2023 win over ASU, the Utes highest point total in the history of the series.
15.82 – Brant Kuithe's average yards per catch so far in the 2024, a figure that leads all Big 12 tight ends.
4 – Consecutive wins over ASU for Utah, their longest win streak ever at the expense of the Sun Devils.
