SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah's swim and dive team hosted the University of Nevada Las Vegas Rebels for their home opener, defeating the men's team 187-113 and the women's team 171-129, in the Ute Natatorium on Friday night.
The Utes and the Rebels met in Salt Lake City for the sixth time in program history. The last face off between these two schools was in November of the 2023 season in Las Vegas, Nev. and both Utah teams came out victorious, women 162-137 and men 179-119.
"Today was a solid meet and I am very happy with how we did today. People are tired and fatigued and working hard, but we're racing well and we pulled off a nice couple of wins today," said head coach
Jonas Persson.
Top of the Podium
- The women's 400-yard medley relay hooked in the first gold of the meet, clocking in at 3:46.63.
- Freshman Jones Lambert won the 1000-yard freestyle touching the wall at 9:29.19.
- Sophomores Jakub Walter and Nick Chirafisi went one-two in the 200-free, coming in at 1:39.51 and 1:39.94.
- Graduate Parker McOmber touched the wall at 50.06 for a gold in the 100-yard backstroke.
- Freshman Rylee McColley and senior Alyssa Sorenson earned gold and silver for the Utes, swimming 1:03.74 and 1:04.46 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
- Junior Evan VanBrocklin walked away from the 200-yard butterfly with a victory after a 1:49.52 finish.
- Junior Erin Palmer took first in the 50-free with a finish of 23.56.
- Freshman Marshall Odom and sophomore Will Woodall took the top two spots in the 50-free after swimming 21.05 and 21.06.
- Senior Holly Waxman dominated women's diving, taking gold in both the 1m and 3m competitions.
- Senior Norah Hay earned gold in the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:01.17.
- Junior Brandon Miller stole first after swimming a 1:48.74 and outtouching a UNLV swimmer in the 200-back.
- McColley earned her second gold of the night in the 200-yard breast with a 2:18.11.
- Lambert also earned his second gold of the night with a 4:32.98 finish in the 500-free.
- VanBrocklin earned a gold in the 100-yard fly with a time of 49.32.
- Junior Elias Petersen earned gold on both the 1m and 3m events for the men's diving, with scores of 393.15 (1m) and 376.73 (3m).
- Sophomore Ella Derby took home the gold in 400-yard IM with a time of 4.29.09.
- Freshman Strahinja Maslo earned gold in 400-yard IM with a time of 3:58.84, just .3 seconds off of the pool record.
- Utah women won their second relay, finishing with 1:33.16 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
- Quickly following, the Utah men won their own 200-free relay, clocking in at 1:22.53.
Sweepers
- Lambert, Quinn Jones, and Tomas Chocholaty swept the 1000-yard free.
- On the diving side, Waxman, freshman Callie Eaglestone and junior Kathryn Grant took the top three spots in the women's 1m competition.
- In the 200-breast, McColley, sophomore Teagan Steinmetz, sophomore Ella Derby and senior Krystal Lieu swept first through fourth.
- Lambert, Chirafisi, freshmen Nolan Arnholt and Quinn Jones swept first through fourth in the 500-free.
- Maslo, Miller, and senior Baylor Lewis swept the 400-yard IM to close out the individual races for the night.
FRESH-Men
- Lambert won the 1000-yard freestyle, coming in more than five seconds before his closest opponent, he also won the 500-yard freestyle.
- Freshman Alexia Duncan dropped time in her 100-back for a third-place finish.
- McColley earned her second and third first-place finishes of the season after top finishes in the 100 and 200-breast.
- Odom outtouched a Utah swimmer for a .01 lead in the 50-free he also finished 3rd in the 100-yard fly with a time of 49.95.
- For diving, in the second meet of her career, Eaglestone earned two silver medals and marked her name in the Utes' record book for top 10th score after her 1m performance earned a 291.45.
- Maslo not only won the 4-IM, but was just 0.3 of a second off breaking the pool record.
"Today was a great follow up to last week, we had a great meet with basically everyone improving on their scores in at least one event. We had a top ten score from Callie and the women going 1, 2, 3 on 1m is a huge accomplishment, so we're looking good," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "We're going to fine tune some things going in to Texas in a couple weeks, but we're in a good spot."
Diving Well
- On the women's side, Utes swept the 1m competition and earned gold and silver on the 3m.
- For the men, Petersen took home both golds and came within one point of breaking the school 1m record.
In the Zone(s)
- Grant earned her 3m NCAA Zones cut with a score of 288.23.
- Graduate Jesco Helling earned second place on 3m and third on 1m, earning his NCAA Zone Cut on 1m with a score of 309.15.
"I'm really happy with how we pulled this off. Now I feel like we're ready and we know that the training is working, we know that they have a great mental attitude and the culture is coming in nicely-- it's looking right for the season," said Persson. "Now we're going to rest them and going a little bit easier on training and get them ready for our midseason meets."
Looking Ahead
The Utes split up with the divers heading to the Texas Diving Invitational Nov. 15-17, while the swimmers divide between the Texas A&M Invitational on Nov. 20-22 and the Colorado Mesa University Invite on Nov. 20-23.
