AUSTIN – The University of Utah's dive team continued through their second day of their midseason invitational at University of Texas with four of the seven competing Utes earning a spot in the one and three-meter finals at the Texas Diving Invitational in the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center on Saturday night.
In Saturday's session, the women competed on the 1m springboards, while the men took on the 3m event. The top 12 athletes on each board continued on to the finals competition of each board, with junior
Elias Petersen, senior
Holly Waxman, freshman
Callie Eaglestone and junior
Kathryn Grant representing the Utes.
"The women were excellent today and they made a huge statement here. Having three women in the top seven at this meet, against incredibly tough competition is amazing," said head coach
Richard Marschner. "Elias had a very nice prelim, but was just a bit off in the final. He did some really nice things with his dives, but just couldn't quite finish them through the water."
On the 3m
- Petersen earned a spot in the 3m final competition after coming in at 5th place in prelims. In finals, Petersen totaled a score of 344.14, marking the third time he has reached the NCAA Zones cut. The Swedish diver earned the most points on his second dive, after his front 3 ½ pike, added 69.75 points to his total.
- Freshmen Attila Bernatsky and Breck Titus finished off their 3m preliminary performances in 22nd and 23rd.
On the 1m
- Grant went into 1m finals after her preliminary list earned her 10th place. In finals, she averaged almost fifty points a dive, which bumped her to fourth place-- the highest placing Ute in the 1m event. Her final score of 295.65 was solidified after she earned 54.60 points on her final dive, a front 2 ½ somersaults in the pike position. Grant's 1m performance in finals scored more than 30 points higher than her prelims list and earned the Canadian diver a new season high on the event.
- Following less than one point behind, Waxman finished the 1m final in fifth, earning 294.55 on her six dives. Waxman's highest scoring dives were in her second and sixth round, both her reverse twister—a reverse 1 ½ flip with 1 ½ twist—and her forward 2 ½ pike earning 52.00 points.
- Eaglestone ended her 1m finals performance with a total score of 290.95, putting the freshman in seventh place. She earned the most points on her second dive, a front 2 ½ pike, adding 52.00 points to her score.
- Freshman Sarah Kauffman finished the preliminary event in 36th.
- The 1m finalists scored higher than divers from the University of Texas, Stanford and Arizona, and Utah was the only school to have three divers in the top seven.
"The whole team is diving at a very high level for this point in the season," said Marschner. "Our women are turning some heads and people are taking notice."
Looking Ahead
Competition for the divers continues through Sunday morning with both the men and women taking part in the tower event.
