AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Utah's dive team earned three spots in the women's one-meter finals and one spot in the men's three-meter final at the second-day of the Auburn Diving Invitational at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center on Thursday afternoon.
In Thursday's session, the men competed on the 3m springboards, while the women took on the 1m event. The top 12 student-athletes on springboard continued on to finals, with graduate
Jesco Helling, senior
Holly Waxman, junior
Kathryn Grant and freshman
Callie Eaglestone representing the Utes.
"I'm really happy with Jesco's springboard performance here," said head diving coach Richard Marshner. "He's been very steady and that's not easy to do after the long layoff he has had on the boards. I'm optimistic that he'll keep his momentum going on tower, which is his best event."
On the 3m
- Helling's first list finished with a score of 352.80 and sent him into the final sitting in third-place. In the final, he scored 63 points even on his first and sixth dive, a front 2 ½ with a full twist (a full out) and an inward 2 ½ pike. These two dives contributed to his overall score of 345.45 and a sixth-place finish.
- Freshmen Attila Bernatsky earned 17th place with a score of 176.95.
"The women showed out today on one-meter as we took half of the top six spots. Holly got edged out in finals, but her prelim performance vs the field would be the difference between her making the A-final at NCAAs and the B-final. It's so important to be able to perform well in prelims and she did an excellent job with that," said Marschner. "Kathryn and Callie had great lists both rounds and Kat is really just a minor correction away from adding 15-20 points to her score"
On the 1m
- In the preliminary competition, three Utes made it into the top five, sending Waxman, Grant and Eaglestone into the final.
- After earning the top spot in the prelims, Waxman earned a silver after her performance finished with 292.15. Her highest scoring dives came in the fourth and fifth round, with her inward 1 ½ pike and reverse 1 ½ pike both added 51.60 to her overall score.
- Grant finished finals in fifth with a total score of 279.40. Remaining consistent, her dives all scored between 44 and 48.50 points, but her highest dive esrned 48.30, a back 1 ½ somersault pike.
- Coming in just behind Grant, Eaglestone stepped into sixth in finals with 279.05. The UK native stayed consistent as well, all dives scoring within seven points of each other. Her showstopper came in the third round, a back 1 ½ pike earning 49.45 points.
- Freshman Sarah Kauffman and junior Sydney Kowalski came in back-to back with total scores of 200.75 and 202.00.
