SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah swimming and diving team set eight new pool records during day one of their two-day meet against the BYU Cougars, which got underway on Friday at the Richards Building Pool in Provo, Utah.
"It was a very fast meet," said coach
Jonas Persson. "Our women's team was extraordinary today and it was a great moment for tomorrow. Our men did well in the circumstances and a lot of men stepped up and swam fast, which makes tomorrow a very competitive meet. I'm grateful that both teams are responding so well and believe in each other, themselves, and in what we do."
The first pool record that fell came courtesy of
Lily Milner, who finished the 200 free in 1:48.78 to snag first place.
Summer Stanfield then smashed the Richards' record in the 200 IM in 2:01.43 and
Cameron Daniell did the same in the 1650 free, clocking in at 16:46.80.
New mark No. 4 was recorded by
Tomas Chocholaty in the men's 1650 free with a mark of 15:27.85 and
Norah Hay kept the records coming in the 100 back by touching in 53.83.
Jaek Horner put his name in the Richards Pool record book by finishing first in the 100 breast in 52.31 and Stanfield put together another record-setting performance in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.00. The final pool best put up by the Utes on Friday came from
Reagan Cathcart in the 50 free, where she reached the finish in 22.68.
Jakub Walter added one more first place finish onto the pile for Utah, winning the men's 200 free in 1:37.28.
Utah's women's team will carry a 93.5 – 56.5 edge into day two of the meet, while the men's squad will be trying to erase an 88-62 deficit.
