PROVO, Utah – The University of Utah swimming and diving team put up five more new pool records,
Holly Waxman won both women's diving events and
Kathryn Grant recorded the program's seventh-best 1m score ever on Saturday afternoon as the women's squad posted a 188.5-111.5 triumph and the men's squad suffered a 181-113 defeat against the BYU Cougars inside the Richards Building Pool in Provo, Utah.
In The Pool
The first pool record to be shattered came courtesy of
Norah Hay in the 200 back and her time of 1:55.90 beat the previous mark by more than three seconds. In the men's 200 back, it was
Brandon Miller's turn to put his name in the record book, clocking at 1:44.28, a full second ahead of the prior pool best.
In the women's 500 free,
Cameron Daniell bested the field in 4:53.91, another top Richards Pool time and that was soon followed by
Kim Lanaghen's record setting performance in the 100 fly in 54.61. The Utah women put their name atop the pool leaderboard once more in the 400 free relay, courtesy of
Isabella Riso,
Lily Milner, Hay and
Reagan Cathcart, who reached the finish in 3:21.22.
The list of victors for the Utes also included
Evan VanBrocklin, who bested the field in 43.97 in the 100 free, matching the Richards Pool record, and
Tomas Chocholaty in the 500 free after clocking in at 4:28.37.
The Utes finished the weekend with 13 Richards Building Pool records all to themselves to go with VanBrocklin's record-tying effort.
"I am very happy about today," said coach
Jonas Persson. "The women were extraordinarily good and I'm so excited they were able to pull off the win and win with a big margin. The men swam really well, but it wasn't quite enough to get away with the win. That's OK, as we still have three-and-a-half weeks left of the season and we're looking really good for conference championships coming up."
On The Boards
Waxman led the way for the Utes on the boards, starting with a score of 303.68 that put her atop the 1m leaderboard, her fourth first-place showing in that event in 2023-24. She put on another top-notch performance in the 3m, piling up 325.35 points to easily outpace the field in that competition. Both of Waxman's efforts were good enough to surpass the NCAA Championships qualifying benchmark.
Grant also stood out on Saturday, especially diving off the 1m, where she crafted a mark of 302.78 that pushed her up into seventh-place on the all-time Utah leaderboard. Grant placed third in the 3m and right behind her was Syndey Kowalski, who continued her streak of excellent showings by racking up 279.08 points.
"Our women did an amazing job today," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "Holly showed once again why she's one of the best divers in the country as she put up some big scores in a tough environment. Kathryn set a new personal-best on 1m breaking 300 for the first time, while Sydney set a personal-best on 3m. It's great to see us rounding into top form as we head into championship season."
