SALT LAKE CITY – The final home meet on the 2023-24 schedule has almost arrived for the University of Utah men's swimming and diving team and the Utes will take the opportunity to honor their nine-person senior class on Saturday before they lock horns with the USC Trojans at 11 a.m. inside the Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.
The list of Senior Day honorees consists of
Dylan Becker,
Holden Ellsworth,
Micah Ginoza,
Jaek Horner,
Marko Kovacic,
Nick Mason,
Preston Planells,
Nathan Ramey and
Matt Wilcox.
"This group of seniors are all great people, great swimmers, and wonderful teammates," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "It's been a pleasure coaching them and spending time with them the last few years. They will be missed!"
These swimmers have racked up a seemingly endless list of accomplishments and Becker, Ellsworth, Horner, Kovacic, Planells, Ramey and Wilcox can lay claim to a time that ranks inside the top 10 in program history in one or more races. Horner has led the way in that category and he currently owns Utah's fastest marks in the 100 and 200 breast and has taken home medals at the Pac-12 Championships, as well as attained All-American status.
Ginoza took advantage of his opportunity at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships, recording a personal-best in the 1650, while Mason, who joined the Utes as a grad transfer from Florida State, was an Olympic Trials qualifier during his time with the Seminoles.
This group of graduates will be trying to help the Utes earn a win over a USC squad making its first trip to Salt Lake City since 2021, when the Trojans triumphed, 164.5 – 96.5. The last time Utah topped USC was in the spring of 2020. The victors on that day for Utah included Horner, who bested the field in the 200 breast by clocking in at 2:02.73.
"It's always a fun meet when USC men's team comes to town," said Persson, "and both teams will be ready to swim fast. Last dual meet of the season, which means it's almost time for our biggest meet of the season; conference championship, which we are all really excited about."
