SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team looks to right its ship this Thursday, Feb. 15, as it opens up a three-game road swing at USC inside the Galen Center. Dan Hellie and Casey Jacobsen will have the call as the Runnin' Utes look to put an end to their road woes against the Trojans starting at 9 p.m. (MT) on FS1.
WE (DON'T) LOVE LA
Since joining the league in 2011-12, Utah has struggled against the LA schools and have been swept four five times out of nine opportunities where they've faced both USC and UCLA on the same road swing. Utah has also swept the LA schools twice on the road (2015-16 & 2018-19). In the two instances where the Utes have taken the split (2013-14 & 2014-15), Utah's win have come against the Trojans.
LEGACY CEMENTED
Utah big man
Branden Carlson cemented himself into Runnin' Ute lore on Saturday, Feb. 10, when he passed David Foster to become the program's all-time blockers leader with his 220th career block with 6:16 left in the game. The South Jordan native tied Foster for the program lead on the first trip down on the defensive in of the second half, swatting a jumper from Jose Perez out of bounds just 22 seconds in. The 7-footer still has seven regular-season games remaining as well as one guaranteed game in the Pac-12 Tournament remaining to add to his name.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah battled Arizona State to the end on Saturday after a triple-overtime battle just 48 hours earlier but came out just short, 85-77. The Utes battled back early in the first half to take a 42-40 lead in the first half. The Sun Devils came out firing in the second half to the tune of a 13-3 run to retake the 53-45 lead and never let go of it. ASU would get its lead into the low double-digits but the Runnin' Utes were able to bring it back down to a one or two possession game each time but couldn't string enough defensive stops together to get over the hump as it dropped the second-straight game at home for the first time this season.
UP NEXT
Utah will get an extra day of prep in Los Angeles as it closes out the trip with UCLA on Sunday, Feb. 18, inside Pauley Pavilion starting at 5 p.m. (MT) on FS1. Dan Hellie and Casey Jacobsen will once again have the call between the Utes and Bruins as Utah looks to secure its first win inside Pauley since 2019.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Runnin' Utes will close out their three-game road swing the following weekend with a few extra days of prep before heading to Boulder to face Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 24, inside the CU Events Center. Ted Robinson and UCLA legend Bill Walton will have the call on that game as Utah looks to sweep the Buffs on the season series for the first time since sweeping three-consecutive years (2015-17).
