SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Lacrosse team fell to the No. 6 Denver Pioneers, 16-8, inside Rice-Eccles Stadium today.
The Utes trailed by four at half and looked to find momentum in the second, cutting the Denver lead to just three as they headed into the final quarter. Unfortunately, the Utes would be unable to make up the deficit, being held to just one goal in the fourth quarter while Denver scored six.
GAME LEADERS
MJ McMahon,
Carson Moyer and
Tyler Bradbury scored two goals each with
Ryan Stines and
Jordan Hyde also finding the back of the net.
Joey Boylston led the team with six ground balls, adding a caused turnover while
Colby Plotts and
Bryce Horton also contributed caused turnovers.
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
After Denver scored first, the Utes countered quickly with
Zachary White finding Bradbury open for a goal to make it 1-1 with 11:32 left in the first quarter. The back and forth continued with Utah tying the score once against at the 6:37 mark with a beautiful cut behind the net by McMahon to find his first goal of the game.
Utah trailed 6-3 heading into the second quarter with Denver scoring back-to-back goals to start, taking an 8-3 lead with 10:33 on the clock. Stines linked up with Hyde for a goal to make it 8-4 followed by Moyer's second of the game to make it a three-point game, but Denver would score once more to make it 9-5 at half.
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
The Utes held Denver scoreless in the third quarter with McMahon and Bradbury scoring to cut the Pioneer lead to just 10-7.
Colin Lenskold had two key saves in the quarter, along with the Utes causing several turnovers for some defensive momentum.
Unfortunately for the Utes, the momentum would stop in the third quarter with Denver scoring six goals compared to Utah's one. Stines punched in his only goal of the game with 9:07 to go in the fourth quarter, the last for the Utes with Denver eventually leaving with the 16-8 victory.
