SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In its second game in five days, the University of Utah Lacrosse team fell to the No. 6 Syracuse Orange on the road, 18-7.
The Utes finished the game with 44 shots, including 21 on goal with 31 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. The Utes were also 22-of-28 on clears, but unfortunately committed 18 turnovers when having possession of the ball.
GAME LEADERS
Junior
Cody Hart and senior
Jordan Hyde scored two goals each with Hart adding an assist for a team-high three points. Sophomore
Ryan Stines finished the game with two points (1 goal, 1 assist) with a career-high two caused turnovers while both
Zachary White and
Tyler Bradbury rounded out Utah's scorers with one goal each.
Senior
Joey Boylston led the team in ground balls with a season-high six, also tying his career-high in caused turnovers for the second time this year with three. Freshman
Luca Pivetta also had a career-best four ground balls along with two faceoff wins.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Colin Lenskold recorded a season-high 17 saves in the game with Syracuse getting off 35 shots on goal.
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
Lenskold had five saves in the first quarter, including two key stops in the first five minutes of the game with the second leading to Utah's first goal. Bradbury would find the back of the net with 11:58 to go after Stines linked up with him 20 yards out to make it 1-0.
Syracuse quickly countered with back-to-back goals to make it 2-1 in its favor at the 10:26 mark, but the Utes continued to push with Hart scoring from distance with a laser into the goal to tie the game with 8:32 to go in the first quarter.
The Orange would go on a three-goal run for the three-point lead, but Stines would punch one in on a bounce shot to make it 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Unfortunately for the Utes, their goal at the 3:03 mark of the first quarter would be their last of the half with Syracuse jumping out to a 10-3 advantage. The Utes out-shot the Orange in the second quarter, but were unable to find the back of the net.
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
Utah still couldn't find a spark on offense in the third quarter, being held scoreless once again for the entire period. Despite Lenskold coming up with five more saves, the Utes trailed 13-3 heading into the final quarter.
The spark the Utes needed came in the final period, but unfortunately the deficit was too large to overcome. Hyde scored back-to-back goals to make it 13-5 with 13:06 to go in the game with Hart scoring his second of the game to make it 14-6 with White scoring Utah's final goal of the game with 5:48 left to play, allowing Syracuse to walk away with the 18-7 victory.
