FEDERAL WAY, Wash. –
Emilia Nilsson Garip won the Pac-12 1m Championship with a score of 321.55 to highlight day two of the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships for the University of Utah swimming and diving team on Thursday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Nilsson Garip is the program's first women's Pac-12 champion ever and the first overall since
Luke McDivitt seized the conference title on the men's platform in 2021.
On the Boards
Utah's freshman from Sweden started off the day by racking up 310.95 points in the prelims, the highest score in that round, but in the final, she found herself in eighth after her first dive. Undeterred, Nilsson Garip started climbing the leaderboard, first jumping up to fifth, then second and finally into first. With her final dive of the competition, she posted a score of 54.60 to secure the title.
Also making her way into the 1m final was
Kathryn Grant, who placed fifth with a mark of 286.15.
Holly Waxman garnered a spot in the 1m consolation final, where her total of 269.25 landed her in fourth.
In the men's 3m,
Elias Petersen nearly joined his teammate atop the podium. He started the day placing fourth in the prelims and only got better in the final. The sophomore from Sweden piled up 416.20 points to move up to second and capture his first Pac-12 silver medal and third medal at the conference championships overall in his Utah career.
"This is one of the best days we've ever had at the Pac-12 Championships," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "Emilia and Kat were excellent all day and Emilia topped it off with our first women's Pac-12 Championship in swimming and diving. It's an exhilarating experience to see it all come together. This conference is so hard and so deep and we are leaving the conference as one of the best, if ot the best team in the conference.
"Elias' 3m performance showed so much fortitude coming back after a disappointing one-meter result. He's proving himself and the country that he's truly one of the best divers out there. I'm so grateful to have the privilege to coach this team and share in their journey."

On the swimming side,
Cameron Daniell and
Taylor Kabacy both earned spots in the 500 free C final, where Daniell placed third and Kabacy took sixth. Daniell clocked in at 4:46.94, the fourth-fastest time in school history, while Kabacy's mark of 4:48.55 landed her seventh in the Utah record book.
Summer Stanfield reached the 200 IM B final and finished with a time of 1:59.79, while
Erin Palmer also earned a B final spot in the 50 free and found the finish in 22.56. In the 200 free relay, Palmer teamed up with
Reagan Cathcart,
Maddie Woznick and
Norah Hay to place sixth in 1:31.19.
"It was a great day today," said coach
Jonas Persson. "We had people make it back in every single event and that means we score a lot of points. We have some personal-bests and top 10 all-time swims. Usually today is not our strongest day, so the fact that we had so many people score points is a great sign for the next two days and to top this off with a win on 1m was exciting and something that livens up the entire team."
Utah's team point stands at 245, the conference's sixth-highest total.

Day three of the championships will encompass five swimming events, as well as the women's 3m and men's platform diving competitions. The day's prelims will begin at 11:30 a.m. MT.
