COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a tale of two halves for the University of Utah Lacrosse team in its season opener, falling to the Ohio State Buckeyes on the road, 11-8.
The Utes scored six goals in the first half, including four in the first quarter, but were only able to score two in the second half with Ohio State taking advantage of the lack of offense from Utah.
Utah only had two assists on its eight goals, finishing the game with 36 shots (18 on goal). The Utes also had 30 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers and was 20-of-21 on clears with Utah's 12 CTOs tying for fourth all-time in program history.
GAME LEADERS
The Utes had four different players score against the Buckeyes, led by sophomore
Ryan Stines, who put up a hat trick. It was the eighth time in his career that he has scored three-or-more goals, bringing his goal total to 41 in just 18 career games. Senior
Carson Moyer also added two goals, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Tyler Bradbury racked up a career-high seven ground balls along with a goal, the 34
th straight game that Bradbury has scored at least one point. Senior
Joey Boylston tied his career-high in caused turnovers with three while sophomore
Nikko DiPonio added two CTOs.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
It was Utah's game in the first quarter, taking an early 2-0 lead with 7:29 on the clock. Bradbury struck first after
Jordan Hyde found him open in front of the crease, followed by Moyer's first goal of the game on a juke move to give the Utes the two-point advantage.
After Ohio State found the back of the net with 3:32 to go to make it 2-1, Utah answered with back-to-back goals from Stines and Moyer. Stines punched one in at the high corner at the 3:24 mark after a fake threw the defender off with Moyer scoring on a give-and-go from Hyde to put Utah up 4-1 heading into the second quarter.
Utah out-shot Ohio State 14-8 in the first quarter, including nine shots on goal, also winning the ground ball game at 10-7.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Stines made it a four-point advantage for the Utes to start the second quarter, shooting a laser right down the middle for his second goal of the game at the 13:06 mark. The Buckeyes countered with a goal of their own to make it 5-2 with 11:55 on the clock, but Stines would once again have the answer, driving in his third goal into the back of the net to put Utah up 6-2 with 11:29 remaining.
Ohio State scored with 9:55 on the clock to make it a three-point game, gaining some momentum as the two teams headed into the final part of the second quarter. The Buckeyes would go on to score two more goals with under six minutes to play in the half with Utah taking a 6-5 lead into the third quarter.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
After scoring with 11:29 to go in the second quarter, Utah wouldn't find the back of the net again for over 20 minutes, allowing Ohio State to take a 7-6 lead. With 4:30 to go in the third quarter though, junior
Cody Hart would drill one in from the outside to tie things up 7-7.
With 34 seconds to go in the third quarter, goalkeeper
Colin Lenskold would make a key save, keeping the score tied as both teams headed into the final quarter of the game.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes took an 8-7 lead just 30 seconds into the final quarter of the game with true freshman
Mikey Crane scoring a long-pole goal and the first of his collegiate career for the one-point advantage.
Unfortunately for the Utes, it would be their last points of the game as Ohio State would hold them scoreless for the remaining 14 minutes. The Buckeyes scored the tying goal with 13:51 on the clock, turning it into a 4-0 run to seal the 11-8 victory.
