SALT LAKE CITY – After putting together an historic performance at the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of Utah diving team got their time at the NCAA Zone E Championships started with win in the women's team diving event on Saturday evening at the Wall Aquatic Center in Flagstaff, Ariz.
"The team is diving incredibly well right now and it was great to start of the competition today with a win in the team event by our women," said diving coach
Richard Marschner. "This is the first time we've had the opportunity to compete the team event at zones and we're very excited that it is a scored event in the Big12 and hopefully it will be scored at NCAAs as well. It gives the divers a chance to be recognized as a team and to contribute to the team in way that we've never been able to do before.
"The individual events start on Monday and this team has been tried and tested throughout the season so I know we're ready to show everyone what we're capable of."
This makes back-to-back meets in which the Utes have claimed the top spot in the women's team diving event, as they also accomplished this same feat at the Pac-12 Championships.
Sydney Kowalski,
Holly Waxman and
Emilia Nilsson Garip combined to post a score of 317.25, second-highest in program history in a team competition. The Utes also topped the leaderboard ahead of a slew of teams, including Pac-12 rival UCLA and BYU.
The beginning to the meet signals a carryover of momentum from the conference meet, where Utah's divers collected three medals and seven top eight finishes. No one had a more impressive performance than
Emilia Nilsson Garip, as the freshman from Sweden won her first conference title in the 1m, then repeated that feat in the 3m, becoming the first Ute to ever claim two Pac-12 Championships. For her efforts, Nilsson Garip went home with the Pac-12's Diver of the Meet award.
Nilsson Garip wasn't only Ute to leave the conference meet with hardware, as
Elias Petersen placed second in the men's 3m, the third Pac-12 medal of his Utah career. Petersen will be attempting to secure a spot at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year after reaching nationals in the 1m and the 3m in 2023.
Kathryn Grant will also be aiming to lock up a spot at the NCAA Championships for the second straight season, while Waxman is looking to make her third trip to nationals and both divers had strong showings at Pac-12's. Grant earned spots in the 1m and platform final, earning a fifth place finish in the former event, while Waxman's work put her in the 3m and platform and she landed in fourth in each competition.
Kowalski secured her opportunity at the Zone E Championships during Utah's time at the Air Force Diving Invite. The Minnesota native posted a score of 175.80 on the platform in Colorado Springs, sending her through to the NCAA Zone E Championships.
