FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – One day after having three female divers lock down spots at the NCAA Championships for the first time ever, the University of Utah diving team had
Holly Waxman,
Kathryn Grant and
Emilia Nilsson Garip all secure the chance to compete in the 3m at Nationals during day two of the NCAA Zone E Championships on Tuesday at the Northern Arizona Aquatic Complex in Flagstaff, Arizona.
"It's been so fun watching this team perform so far this week," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "We've exceeded any realistic expectations. We're 7-for-7 so far in events participated in and qualified. It was a little less stressful today knowing we'd already qualified for the [NCAA Championships], but they still had to dive extremely well to qualify for the 3m. I think we still have some things we can work on and its exciting we did as well as we did, knowing we still have a lot left. We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow and hopefully we get a few more events added to our schedule at NCAA's and finish strong."
All three Utes started the day by placing inside the top 10 in the 3m prelims, led by Waxman and her score of 317.40, which allowed her to take second. Nilsson Garip was one spot behind her with a mark of 313.55 and Grant took ninth by piling up 285.30 points.
In the final, each Utah diver remained on point, starting with Nilsson Garip and her score of 314.05, which bumped her up to second. Waxman was able secure a fifth-place finish, thanks to a total of 288.75 and Grant climbed up to seventh by crafting a mark of 291.30. The next time these three Utes dive from the 3m, they'll be vying for a National Championship.
