SALT LAKE CITY – After an historic showing at the Pac-12 Diving Championships followed by another brilliant performance at the NCAA Zone E Championships, University of Utah divers
Emilia Nilsson Garip,
Holly Waxman and
Kathryn Grant are preparing to vie for National Championships at the 2024 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held from Wednesday through Saturday at the Jack Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Georgia.
This is the first time the Utes have sent three female divers to nationals and all three Utah divers earned their opportunities through exceptional work at zones. Waxman recorded the team's highest finish in both the 1m and the platform, piling up 281.15 points in the former event, followed by a mark of 232.45 in the latter. Waxman will have the chance to try and top her performance at last year's NCAA Championships, which included a 15th-place finish in the 1m, highest ever by a Ute in that competition and good enough for her to achieve All-American status.
This will also be the second consecutive trip to nationals for Grant, who dove in the 1m and the platform in 2023, placing 21st in the platform competition with a total of 249.10, putting her in the top five among Pac-12 divers in that event. At zones in 2024, the Ontario, Canada native finished in the top 12 in each competition, crafting her best performance in the 1m, where she landed in sixth thanks to a mark of 289.80. She's also collected multiple victories in the 3m so far in 2023-24, most recently against Arizona State on Nov. 20.
Competing at the NCAA Championships will be the final act in a banner freshman year for Nilsson Garip, who started her time at Utah by setting school records in the 1m and 3m in November. Three months later, she became the first Ute to take home multiple Pac-12 Championships, winning the 1m and the 3m at the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. She then secured her chance to dive at nationals by posting top eight finishes in the 1m and 3m at NCAA zones, including a second place showing in the 3m.
Grant and Nilsson Garip will be trying to join Waxman and Kersten Merry on the list of female Utah divers who have achieved All-American status. Utah's last National Champion in swimming and diving came in 1975, when Jeff Rolan won a national title in the 100 butterfly.
