ATHENS, Ga. –
Emilia Nilsson Garip achieved the highest finish ever by a Utah diver on the women's 1m and
Holly Waxman attained All-American status for the second straight season for the University of Utah swimming and diving team on the second day of the NCAA Championships, which continued Thursday at the Jack Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
"Today was an incredible start to the Championships," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "We had one of the best days we could've asked for. Kathryn, Holly and Emilia all dove incredibly well. I can't overstate how difficult it is to get to his meet and get through it and be in the B final. We were one of only two teams with two scoring women in this event. We're building a lot of momentum for tomorrow and Saturday. I know the ladies are feeling confident in what they're doing and I'm really excited to see what we've got going for the 3m tomorrow."
The day started with Waxman, Nilsson Garip and
Kathryn Grant all competing in the 1m prelims, where Grant bested the score of 253.65 she posted in 2023. Her total of 254.85 garnered her a 30th place finish.
Waxman finished the preliminary round in 11th, piling up 279.45 points, one spot ahead of Nilsson Garip and her mark of 278.95. Those performances sent both divers ahead to the consolation final.
In that final, Nilsson Garip's score improved to 314.90, placing her first in the consolation round and ninth overall in 1m. That goes down as the highest every by a Ute in women's 1m, besting Waxman's 15th place finish from 2023. Waxman also topped that placement from a year ago, concluding the event with 290.75 points to place 12th. Both of those performances were good enough to earn All-American honors. This the first time the Utes have ever had two female divers named All-Americans in the same season.
Only Utah and Texas had two divers finish in the top 16 on Thursday.
