ATHENS, Ga. –
Holly Waxman became the first female Utah diver to ever achieve All-American status in two events in the same year on Friday afternoon by placing 12th in the women's 3m on day three of the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jack Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Georgia.
"Holly is having a sensational meet," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "She keeps getting better and better. She's really figured out how to navigate the difficulty of this meet. It's not easy to do what she's done.
"We've cracked the top 16 on the 3m for the first time in program history for the women. Holly's logged two 12th place finishes and we've still got something to go. We had another great performance by Emilia, finishing in the top 25 in her first meet here. We're looking forward to finishing strong on the platform tomorrow and finishing off what's been a sensational season for our female divers."
Waxman was joined by
Emilia Nilsson Garip and
Kathryn Grant in the 3m prelims and Waxman maneuvered her way into the top 16 for the second straight day by piling up 293.15 points, placing her 15th and sending her to the consolation final.
Nilsson Garip managed to earn a share 25th with a score of 273.10, while Grant's mark of 232.05 placed her 46th. The Utes are one of only four teams in the nation to have multiple divers place in the top 25 in each of the first two events at the NCAA Championships.
In that consolation final, Waxman continued to get better and concluded the event with a score of 301.15, boosting her three spots up the leaderboard into 12th. This allowed Waxman to claim the title off All-American in the 3m one day after attaining the same status in the 1m, making her the first female swimmer or diver from Utah to collect All-American honors in two competitions in the same year. By finishing 12th, she also posted the best finish ever by a member of the women's swimming and diving squad in the 3m at the NCAA Championships.
Utah's total of 19 diving points through two events also ranks as one of the highest totals in the country.
