SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah swimming and diving team put together a spectacular performance at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships and now
Jaek Horner and
Elias Petersen will get their chance to represent the Utes at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, which are scheduled to take place from Wednesday through Saturday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
This will not be the first trip to the NCAA Championships for either Ute and, for Horner, this marks his third straight season competing on the national stage. In 2022, the then-junior earned All-American honors as part of Utah's 200 medley relay team and helped the 400 medley relay quartet set a new school record. A year later, he returned to swim in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
At the 2024 national meet, Horner will be competing in the 100 free, as well as the 100 and 200 breast, all events in which he posted new personal bests during his graduate year. Those marks included new program records in the 100 and 200 breast to go with 11 total victories and a pair of Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week awards.
Petersen collected his fair share of awards as well during the 2023-24 campaign. He started December by taking home the Pac-12 Diver of the Month award, then collected January's first Pac-12 Diver of the Week honor.
The sophomore from Sweden, who competed at the 2023 NCAA Championships in the 1m and 3m, earned the chance to compete at 2024 nationals by putting together a stellar showing at the NCAA Zone E Championships. He got started by putting up a point total of 375.25 in the 3m final, landing him in fourth and punching his ticket in that event. Two days later, his mark of 336.75 in the 1m garnered him fourth place again and ensured he'd have multiple opportunities to dive at the final meet on the 2023-24 schedule.
Schedule
For Petersen, he will compete in his first event on Thursday, with the 1m trials beginning at 10 a.m. MT, followed by the finals at 4 p.m. MT. Horner will swim in the 100 breast trials on Friday at 8 a.m. MT, followed by the finals at 4 p.m. MT, while Petersen will dive in the 3m trials at 10 a.m. MT, with the finals scheduled for 4 p.m. MT. Horner will then close out the competition for the Utes with two more races on Saturday, the 100 free and the 200 breast, which will get underway around 10 a.m. MT. The finals for those events are slated for 4 p.m. MT.
These events will be broadcast live through ESPN Plus and NCAA.com.
