INDIANAPOLIS –
Elias Petersen got the 2024 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships started for the University of Utah swimming and diving team by earning a top 20 finish in men's 1m on Thursday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
"Elias was lights out today," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "He dove exceptionally well on 1m and really exceeded expectations. He was in great position going into his last dive and we were going for the A final. We could've played it safe and done an easier dive and probably made the top 16, but we came here compete for National Championships and we were in a position to make it up there, so we went for it.
"I'm really proud of his effort today. The way he dove was fantastic and I'm pretty excited about tomorrow and what he can do on his better event."
Petersen's work allowed him to pile up 328.70 points across his six dives and he only narrowly missed out on a top 16 spot, placing 19th. This represents an improvement over his mark of 310.65 in the 1m at nationals last year and his final standing was 16 places higher than a year ago.
Petersen's top 20 finish is the fifth such performance registered by a Ute in the men's 1m and by taking 19th, he posted the highest finish by a Utah men's diver in the 1m since Josiah Purss took 11th in 2016.
